Arkle - The Legend Lives On

great horse .His skeleton is on display in the Irish National Stud .I must say i find it a bit sad and creepy seems disrespectful to such a great horse (to me)Would rather he(or ashes) were buried somewhere meaningful like Dessie.

I really enjoyed this and remember watching him as a child. It's a great documentary, hearing from some legends as well as watching one! Thanks for posting. : )

Thank you for the link such great memories! I normally bemoan getting old but it means i remember seeing Arkle and the moon landings! No other horse is near him, kauto star never had to carry 12stone 7lbs in a handicap. Nowadays horses like arkle would only contest grade 1 races at level weights and race about 3 times a year! Arkle won over 27 chases i his career.

I can just remember seeing Arkle race he was a freak of nature and talking of handicaps he was in part responsible for changes in the system as many a time when Arkle was in a race none of the others would be running off their handicap mark and many races had two sets of weights published depending on whether Arkle run or not.! My ex boss used to Hunt alongside Golden Miller another legend he was regularly out with the Fitzwilliam. Can you imagine those two with modern training methods.

I dont see it as disrespectful as what is going to happen to Dessies ashes in the future?

I just had a quick look to check some weights and although no official handicap rating exists for Arkle only two horses namely Dessie or KS actually got a timeform rating that was less than 2 stone adrift .At Sandown Millhouse who was no slouch ran 16lbs less than Arkle one day who was on 12stone 7 and he got a 20 lenghth beating and Arkle lowered the course record by 11 secs which still stands today even though they run at least a stone lighter. The official handicapper did try to give him an official rating a few years back but gave up because there were not enough creditable runs to compare with other horses but concluded he would be around 210

Have to say I totally agree with this.

I found it sad and disrespectful when I seen it. If it was his ashes in an urn that would be fine, its the fact that its his skeleton and its in the front window that doesn't sit quite right with me.

Arkle was buried after his death and given a proper grave with headstone. Unfortunately some years later his remains were exhumed and the bones cleaned and the skeleton put on display. All a bit grim really and not sure why his grave was disturbed
