Arko or Milton

IMO I did think he looked as if he'd gone to seed a bit at the Olympics, he didn't look too fit compared to the other riders. Sometimes I think our riders look like they've fallen out the pub compared to riders that look like athletes. ( apologizes in advance if anyone in NS camp reading )

Milton is a legend and will always have a special place in people's heart whereas Arko has undoubtedly had enormous success but for me he has often faltered in the big occasion and is a.n. other great warmblood from this enormous european breeding production line.

Definately Milton for me!! He was my hero growing up and I used to pretend my little grey welsh pony was Milton!

I'll never forget the first time I went to olympia and saw him in the flesh (all be it from a distance) - he really was the most Majestic horse.... I have the 'Milton the Millionaire' video at home and never tire of watching it even though it makes me cry.....

If i have to choose between Arko and Milton it would have to be Milton but for my all time favourite show jumper ever would be Marion Mould's Stroller. .

Agree with this completely but surprised that nobody has mentioned Boomerang too. It was very rare for him and Eddie to put a foot wrong especially around Hickstead.

I saw a three year old by Arko loose jumping in the spring; it went like a crab, very uninspiring!

Milton......., he always tried, whereas I doubt Arko's commitment sometimes. Thar said, I love Arko, but Milton was just so joyous to watch........
I remember watching Milton and Waltzerkoening jumping off for the Masters one year..........awesome.........

i think arko lacking commitmeant n disapointing comments are total rubbish... and no it wasent a pedalbon e ingery it was tendon.ligament and when stopping at hickstea ect was the pain not attitude.....................

Going back to earlier point re stroller. He was 14.3h, therefore not actually a pony by BSJA standards. He was however pretty dam awsome! The best small jumper of all time.

With regards to large show jumper, milton everytime. I saw him in the Simply the Best Tour when I was 11, he had something about him. Just magic. No other way to describe him. Magic.

Thanks everyone for your views...

Just to clarify, the original question was 'Milton or Arko'...not 'Who is the greatest showjumper of all time...'
tongue.gif

My reason for comparing the two was that they are both 'millionaire' winners, and they both dominated British showjumping in their time. No other reasons.

Clearly if we are going down the route of 'all time greats' then we could reel off dozens :-

Ratina Z
Deister
Boomerang
Apollo
Dollar Girl
Abdullah
Big Ben
Ryan's Son
Stroller
Jappeloup
ET
Cumano
Shutterfly
Oki Doki
Goldfever
.......

The list is endless

I'm afraid its Milton for me too. I think partly because of growing up in that era and seeing him in action was awesome - there was always a presence about him (and I'm not a fan of greys).
Arko is a great horse but as an adult I probably harder to impress!
I also loved Ryan's Son for his cheeky character and being such an unlikely show-jumper - all that bucking! (I have to admit to having a soft spot for Marleen for the same reason).
From the current horses it would be Oki Doki for me - to me he has a presence about him that reminds me a little of Milton.

For those that were lucky enough to be around when Milton was competing I would say....remember the crowd reaction when ever he entered the ring. No other horse to my knowledge has ever evoked such a reaction so consistently.
Enough said

I agree...he had a charisma that very few others had...but why ? Partly I suspect because he was a 'fairytale' horse...big 'white' grey with flowing mane and tail. Ridden by one of 'our' favourite riders. Partly perhaps because people associated him a little with Caroline Bradley ? But mainly I suspect because he was in a league of his own at the time...and he was British

Red Rum is about the only other horse I can think of to compare him to in that vein

how can u call arko ugly wiv that ugly grey on your picture??????????????????????????????and have u ever been up close to arko????????????????????????????

so how come its a shrewd move arko and russel going to stud, do you know the horses or owners or even there past????????????????????

For me, Miton & Arko are both superb horses !!
To have bred a horse to show jump that achieves 'that' kind of sucess is a dream come true
cool.gif

Arko - looks like a pug
shocked.gif
NEVER - he is such a good looking horse (and yes - I have met archie in the flesh
cool.gif
) ........ and the two colts/stallions I have bred by Arko are good looking boys too

I would say as Archies owner he hasnt alot of support but i wouldnt swop him for any other horse, as for comparing him with Milton they are totally different, Milton was a legend and a machine...
I would like to thank supanova for carrying him round his courses without you picking your leg up he may never have won as much...
As for his lack of commitment , i never thought he let us down and he didnt ( any horse who has a tare in his deep digital flexor tendon would show you he had a problem)
Since his injury he has come back to his best...(goneforfree).

MFH -09 i have seen horses by Cumano, darco, indoctro etc that have jumped like crabs the stallions cant do everything , do you know what mare it was out of? was it a international mare? ..
Wether he floats your boat or not i couldnt think of anybody who wouldnt like to own him or stand him at stud...
He is definately a dream to own and i feel very privaliged to own him , i hope he can carry on performing at the highest level for the next 2 months and go out on a high at olympia, thankyou to everybody who has supported him in the past and i hope you will continue to untill he jumps his last round..

I hate to be pedantic, but in an earlier post you were Becky Smilie, a SJ groom? Could you just clarify your identity please? Thanks!

Whilst i am in little doubt that you have connections to with Arko, i do doubt that you are Lisa....
tongue.gif

In fact in another post you replly to 'Amelia' who asks if you work for Lisa, to which you reply 'Yes'
crazy.gif

BTW... I am a big Arko fan in case you were in any doubt....and i think you CAN compare the two (Milton and Arko). Both were 'millionaire' showjumpers who dominated British showjumping in their time...and both ridden by 'great' British riders. They also both missed out on Olympic medals for one reason or another.

Derek Ricketts described Arko as the 'Greatest horse never to win an Olympic medal...'. I'd have to say 'one of two'
tongue.gif

I agree you cannot compare the two horses, not to mention one was a gelding and the other a stallion (so has the added addition of hormones). Both are fantastic showjumping horses in their own right.
cool.gif

For me Milton was a living legend, I used to love watching him jump, and the hairs on the back of my neck used to stand up when he came into the arena with raptures of applause. My heart always used to be in my mouth when I watched him jump, and he had such a graceful way of going...
smile.gif

And with the "new age" of clones, makes you wonder if we will ever see a cloned Milton!
smirk.gif
Although I think that there will only ever be one Milton!

If Milton was jumping now would he still have been as good? He was jumping 20 years ago and the courses have changed a lot since then. If Arko had been jumping 20 years ago would he have still been a stallion and would that have made any difference to him? If Milton was born in the same era as Arko would he have been left entire - jumping stallions is a lot more popular now.

I've seen both horses jump in the flesh and they both have the X-Factor. I don't know who I would pick.

And Desert Orchid?

To a lesser extent yes...but Rummie and Milton had a certain something else...the success in the eye of adversity factor shall we call it

Hello again ...

Seems people don,t believe me!!!!! well Vashti i did tell you my identity but you havn't told me yours, i dont like hiding behind false names!!!!
Becky does in fact work for me and this is her sign in name..
So Rambo you can now be in no doubt that i am who i say i am and if you need any questions answering i will try and answer them for you..
Everybody is intitled to their own opinion and i also have mine which is both horses are or were world class, but what you have to remember is that he is my pride and joy and all i ask is that the comments about both horses are constructive and not offensive to either horse..

Personally, whilst Milton is a LEGEND and will always be the one remembered as the millionaire grey and he had all the presence, charisma and makes everything he did look effortless .....

Arko is just... well he doesnt look easy in the slightest yet he has still achieved sooo much and has doneso with whomever he was partnered with at the time (although in all honesty he has only ever really had one pilot!)
