Sorry it's a miserable Q.

Does anyone have arrangements for their dogs if you were to die?

I know currently if I died, my dog would end up staying with my parents as I'm living with them.... they're not horrendous owners but recently for various reasons I'm not comfortable with the idea.

I would actually want him to go to my ex, who adores and misses him and whose parents love him to pieces. I have no doubt he would have a happy life with them.

How can I assure this though? Make up some sort of contract which may/may not be legal and hope for the best? My dad thinks that no one other than himself is capable of looking after a dog therefore I've been thinking written agreements etc would be necessary other wise he most likely wouldn't let him go.
So what are your plans for your dogs?? Do you have it in writing?

Make a will and specify what you want. This is what we've done with all our animals, that way there is no confusion. Make sure that you ask the person that you want to care for them first though or they could be in for a bit of a shock.

I also have an insurance policy to pay for their care. It always seemed a bit unfair to me to land ones dogs or horses on someone and expect them to fund it's keep.

Make everything clear in the will about who gets what and who has what amount of money. Very easy to do.

I did think about that, but I dont have anything other than my dog and my horse. Everything else I have would fit in a dustbin :p

Thats why I thought maybe get it in writing..... although I suppose that wouldnt be legally enforceable

Unless you change your will each time you change a pet don't put specific pets in your will but instead put an instruction for xxxx to care for, dispose or whatever my pets, horses, parrot.........as in the letter attached to this will.
Then all that is needed is a new letter of instruction to cover current pets.
