Having a bit of a dilema here!

There has been alot of negativity at our yard recently but now that some people are leaving hopefully this will settle down. There are issues at the yard in that the school is always flooded and there always seems to be some drama or another going on.

Anyways, a space has come up at a very good stables in Epsom (bit further to drive) where my friend has gone. They have 2 schools, a lovely yard but only 4 hours a day turnout. Ty currently gets 6-7 hours a day.

My fear is that if I move him he'll turn into physco horse! I've obviously had issues with him before and I do get alot of support where I am now.

Just spoke to the new yard manager and said that I have reservations about going and spoke to my current yard owner who promises me that improvements are being made slowly (which I have noticed ie school lights etc).

Really not sure what to do!

I think, from what you have said, that it depends upon whether you are putting your horse or yourself first. The place you are at is better for horsey with more turnout etc. He doesn't care about the bitchiness or the flooded school. The new place would, by the sound of it, be better for you.
But personally, I would value more hours of turnout, especially if improvements are being made to your current place. That's my opinion, for what it's worth!

I agree with Marius_mum...because I would only ever put my horses sanity and management before my own personal needs. I think if you are worried about your horse becoming difficult with such limited turnout, then I would stay put and ride through the politics and not so good facilities.

The difference between 4 hours t/o and 6/7 hours t/o a day is pretty small in real terms ! If the other place means you will have more opportunity to ride your horse, then that's an extra hour or so a day out of his box too...

New lights for the school are great....but if you can't use it coz it's flooded then they're about as much use as a chocolate teapot to you aren't they

You have to think why you have your horse. Is it to ride, or sit in a field all the time...

You say your friend is already at this other yard....i'd say move on

If you are at the yard that I think you are at I would move as it has stayed the same for years and years and years and years - I would not worry about the 4 hrs turn out, that is more than sufficient and in reality will probably be longer. Also the hacking will be better so you will get to ride more....

If I am wrong and your yard doesn't begin with C then I would say put yourself first and maybe a clean start at a nice yard is what you need...

FF - hit the nail on the head - that's what I'm worried about that it will never change!

I spoke to the Yard Owner of the new place and she basically said that he would be out from 8 to 12 everyday and when he's not out he'd be in and eating hay so be happy. She said that hand on heart not one horse hasn't settled with her....arrggghhh

She's even had a grass livery move up there and he's settled too.

God, this is such a dilema.......

I agree with Rambo... you have your horse to be able to ride and enjoy him. Our yard has 8-12/1pm turnout and although they are all slightly more uptight during the winter, they all settle well into their routine. As long as you have routine you should be fine. I would personally move, as you don't sound like you are able to enjoy your horse where you currently are!

I don't think you are putting your needs before those of your horse. If your horse has 'relatively' limited t/o then a flooded school is a real problem. Also you are thinking of driving further to see him which is putting yourself out...

I think 4hrs T/O a day is plenty for a horse to burn off the worst of his excess energy and if you have 2 arenas there is more likely to be plenty of space to lunge first etc.

Just my thoughts.

My big problem is that I have had major problems with Ty in the past and the girls at the yard have been excellent - I'm not guaranteed that support whereever I go am I?

I think that's what's making me stay.

I had a long chat with the yard manager last night and I said, please be honest are things going to get done? They are slowly so I suppose I canstay put during the summer and if things don't improve move for the winter

Sounds like a plan stimpy.......... If you notice a fair bit gets done over the summer then it might be worth staying for the extra turnout, if not then you can move on!

How often do I hear of the people not the horses causing problems. To this I blame the YO and this person needs to run the yard correctly. If you all threatend to withhold your rent I am sure things would get fixed.

I have to agree with Rambo, 4 hours a day will be enough for him in the winter. Is it the same in the summer or would he be out more? If more then I would go.

Speak to your friend, if she has already gone she will be able to advise you as to whether it would be best for you and Ty to stay or go.

My dad just pointed out that I'm paying out £500 a month in all for a horse that I can't ride during the week in the winter as the school is so buggered!

I suppose I could ask the new yard if I could review the situ in 5 months as I'll know what's happening with the old yard by then.

I never thought making this decision would be so stressful - doesn't help that my best mate has moved to the new yard and everyone at the current yard is virtually begging me to stay ..... ahhhhhh

I was going to say there's not much difference between 4 and 6 hours turnout (both are no where near enough for me, but thats irrelevant lol) so I would move...BUT if thats all year round then no way! Even if the flies are bad they can be out over night when thre's no flies. Of course that depends on whether there is summer turnout at your present yard.

Summer turnout is the same at present yard as the winter turnout. TBH, I used to bring Ty in alot during the summer as he gets really miserable outside in the heat so that's not really an issue.

I think I'm going to go you know. I'm a bit upset that alot of people have made me feel guilty about leaving the yard - I don't think I'm doing anything wrong! xx

Ive got a numpty TB type too, he moved yards on sat and at the mo hes only out for a couple of hours. Hes never looked more dopey! Gets to eat more this way, put a bit of weight on. He was out before for around 8 + hours so am sure he wont mind.

I know it's not quite the same but alisha was used to being turned out for 7/8 hours a day, she is now on box rest (has been for 3 weeks) hopefully she can go back out on monday. Anyway first couple of weeks were a nightmare, but she seems to have settled now and got into her routine. I'm sure your horse will get used to it, and like you say you can review the situation in 6 months to see how your horse is getting on. Good luck whatever you decide

Go go go go go go go go go go go go go

Amy May - my horse goes out for an hour a day, if he is lucky - and he is happier on the yard he is on than any other yard I have been on.

Well I've done it - handed in my notice and going next Friday - actually quite excited now! xx

Thanks for all your advice etc - makes it so much easier when you can sound things out on here. xx
