Just cannot get rid of it! Vet gave me some iodine and told me to scub her feet twice a day with it. It cleared up lovely, but as still rained constantly, i still scrubbed every other day.

Moved to a new yard on Thursday with a stable (pony is a laminitic) kept her in overnight the first day and her feet look horrible! Really black and thrushy. I'm back on the twice a day iodine scrubbing and shes getting a few hours a day out.

Any ideas? Anything else I can use as the iodine is quite harsh and staining her hooves.

Thanks

I've used Milton in the past as a preventitive measure but does it work as a treatment? And in what dilution?

Thanks again x

Sole paint works wonders, the Iodine is actually pretty good for their feet, hardens them and is a disinfectant so doesn't do any damage.

I have also had some success with athletes foot cream or thrush cream, can push it into the cracks and crevices :)

Our boy gets it quite bad, what works best is little red bottle of kevin bacon hoof stuff. It's really expensive for a little pot (don't buy the big one, its different) and it looks coppery in colour and smells really strong, but we can use it once a day and it clears up within a week even in winter. We then use the big pot of kevin bacon stuff (the yellowy cream stuff) to keep it away- much cheaper!
We used to use purple spray and wash his feet out every night but it never seemed to work for him- we just ended up covered in it ourselves (not good when you're nipping to the shop to buy something for dinner on your way home from the yard!)

How do you all use the iodine? Vet said a splash in a little water and scrub with a brush, farrier said pour a little on neat and scrub with a wet brush.

Is it OK to use neat , or with a tiny drop of water?

Thanks

I use Field Paste, it's enough to kill the thrush but doesn't harm the rest of the hoof. It's made by Red Horse and can be bought online from their website. :)

my farrier told me to do this - it sounds stupid but is massively effective:

scrub feet with antiseptic solution - e.g. Dettol or own brand equivalent

apply generous coating of sugardine to frog and soles.

wrap in new born economy nappies and leave.

Repeat once a day, within a week it should be completely gone. I appreciate it's a faff, but it does get rid of a stubborn case well :)

I used hydrogen peroxide and applied it with a syringe(squirted it on) BUT it will bleach your clothes and it does froth lovely!

This was recommended by my farrier. Can you keep horse off the wet ground in anyway? Trouble is they are probably just getting reinfected(fungus) with all this wet weather.

I use 'frog health' for my mares feet as a preventative when they get a bit smelly.she had it so bad 2 yrs ago she was lame with it.its about £14 a bottle (spray)

Purple spray - have used it, it is a disinfectant, thrush is fungal, I wash my horses feet, dig into the frog with a plastic syringe, dry the thrush with a cloth getting right into the cleft etc, I then spray neat iodine on from a Avon bottle. I do it every day when it is wet , it seems to keep it at bay, when the ground is dry, I get very excited as his frogs look great - until the next lot of wet wether! :( :( :(
