I can't believe the arrogance of Paul Chequers, the taxi driver who killed Cindy last year. He has a 3 month ban from taxi driving, starting today AND GUESS WHAT? Yes, there he was, large as life with a taxi full of passengers, driving along Taunton Rd in Bridgwater this afternoon. I phoned the police and tomorrow, will contact the taxi licensing board. Doubt if either of them will care. I have no faith whatsoever in the system and the people operating it.

Well, you did the right thing reporting him. And I think the police will in fact be very interested if he is driving (and taking passengers) while under a disqualification. Apart from the arrogance it would mean that any insurance is invalid.

Some people's arrogance is unbelievable, I think the authorities will be interested, when I did some taxi work years back the licencing bods were very strict on things regarding the public safety and your vehicle etc, well done for reporting it, hope he gets stuffed in jail.

I've only just caught up with this story. I can't even begin to imagine what you went through and are still going through. The more he breaks the law and any bans he has, the more damage he's doing to himself.

excuse my ignorance, i must have missed something. What happened- who was cindy? :(

Cindy was a horse until this gentleman killed her in his vehicle.....the one he is supposed to be banned from using right now as a result.

TBH I think it is good news he is breaking his ban, they may throw the book at him for it this time, they dont like being made fools of I dont suppose....

Too long a story to go into Pookie: basically Cindy was driven into because the man exercising her was, alledgedly, having an affair with the taxi drivers wife. Rider esaped with badly fractured knee and, later, a spell in a phsychiatric unit; Cindy took approximatly 15 minutes to die in agony.

omg this is awful, never heard of it. was there a thread on this. poor cindy, that man should have got jail, he killed a horse because its rider couldnt keep his boxers on. thats awful

Some people just never learn! We have a guy at my work, who was in the paper for being banned for a car chase whilst no license or insurance................yet on Friday I saw him drive out and WAVE at me on friday after work..............he is banned for like 24 months..............Not our fault he lives 50 miles away from work! If he cant make it he should get a new job

Hello Sky, yes there was a thread entitled 'horse killed in bridgwater' and later 'rip Cindy'.
I had hoped I'd got some kind of closure, but today has left me seething.
Anyway, I'm off to bed now (what with being an 'older' lady and needing lots of rest).
'Night all.

I've been following your posts, but I don't think I've ever commented.
I can't imagine what you must have felt when you saw him in a taxi again, but I am furious on your behalf. I really hope the police do something, but like you said it's unlikely.
Some people just can't understand what horses mean to us :(
I know it's only a small gesture, but *hugs*

Sleep well, I sincerely hope you thought to use your phone to take a photo of this idiot driving, police should act, I would be tempted to take a placard to his place of work, contact the papers anything to show him up for what he is.

I have PM'ed you. Please contact me urgently, I can guide you, I am a Taxi Licensing Officer, not in the West Country but that makes no difference, taxi law is the same countrywide.

I'm new to the forum therefore haven't heard about what happened but from reading the comments, although what he did was completely uncalled for and I believe that it's plain disgusting to punish the horse for the riders actions, I doubt the police would do much more. It seems that his attack on the horse and rider was 'provoked', he had a motive (although a completely invalid one that doesn't justify his actions) so the police would feel that its unlikely that he would intentionally do it again. I could be wrong though as what he did is illegal, however, there is a lorry driver in our area who intentionally drives around trying to hit and spook horses. After the police had recived hundreds of complaints including one from my mum as he was literally a cm off hitting us whilst we were wearing full hi-vis, they went to speak to him and he simply said that he didn't like horses so they see his actions as justified. It is appalling what some people get away with and I hope that you can do something about him, however with the attitude of non-horsey people, it is unlikely much more will be done. :(

Regardless of the original crime (which is despicable in itself), he is driving whilst disqualified and operating as an illegal taxi driver. I would hope the police would be VERY interested in that.

Wasn't there a newspaper that did a story about the 'accident'? It might be worth contacting them and seeing if they'll do a follow up...

He killed a horse because he's an ass and if you're going to get 'caught' for hurting someone it's often far better (punishment wise) to come under Road Traffic Regulations which are based on no intent than belting them with a baseball bat and being charged under one of the offences against a person...

Hope you can help AA... :)

Debatable in this situation... The car was intentionally used as a weapon IMO which is outside the remit of the regs he was charged under... As for your chap, the police (if that is how they've put it) are being ridiculously lazy and I'd put in a formal complaint to the Chief Constable etc and get as many people affected by this idiot on board as possible... Not liking horses is no 'justification' for driving without due care and attention or dangerous driving... Invest in a hat cam too...:)

I suppose seen as he is now driving illegally now, as I say, I hope the police do investigate it further as what he did is completely unjustified its just many wouldn't see it like that. I do feel that more needs to be done to educate drivers on horse awareness as there are specific laws and regulations regarding them yet many continue to act irresponsibly with little, if any, consequences. Also, I don't think it's that its more that he hasn't actually hit anyone just near misses and hurls abuse at the riders as he charges past. Oh I know it is no justification however the police see it that way until he actually does any damage which is terrifying to the extent that many don't hack out as often. The hat cam is a good idea though, thank you. :)

It's technically dangerous driving, and with intent as he has said he doesnt like horses, the highway code is very clear how to drive around horses. I would be challenging them very robustly if it was me and advising them you expect some action or you will be making a complaint. Shocking ineffectiveness by the police but it doesn't surprise me, I've had to tell them the law in the past!

I never saw the original thread but how terrible. I firmly believe anyone driving like that should be banned from all driving for life, & prosecuted for using a weapon, just like you are if you use a knife. And attempted murder too. Only positive thing is that if he can be proved as driving whilst banned, he may get a harsher sentence.
