Maybe its just me being unreasonable?
I have a Tb he's a 5 yo that ive just had cut and have broken but i like to give him a play in the field before and after i ride him just for his welbeing and mind really! ( and so i have no broken bones)

YO has now told me as i use idividual turnout fields and not one that they all go in
( Not! by choice, as he was entire upontil 4 months ago he hasnt really socialized so when i did other people on the yard moaned because he was playing with others and getting into scrapes, so YO asked me to use other field which i obliged to so i had no agro!)
YO has now said that he cant go into the smaller fields as he runs round too much and turns it up :S never seen this atall but i kept my mouth shut ( as im normally a little foward with my opinions i thought i would do as i was told) she has now shut the jumping field, lungeing menage, and riding menage to resurface them all at the same time!! which on other yards would probably be fine but our yard last time they resurfaced the menage it took them 2 years!! i now feel that i am going to have to sell my big lad as he is being wasted with me as i have no facilitys, that or either move off! and not that many yards have 5 free stables, what do i pay £24 a week stable rent for!!

cup of hot chocolate and a tonne of something you fancy for getting through this!! :D
 
maybe talk to YO/YM and explain that your horse needs regular exercise to keep him sane and what their suggestion is as to where you can exercise without causing problems for anyone, and if you can't exercise him then there will be serious injuries (might just scare them a bit even if not true) Thats all i can think of tbh, we were trying to find stables for 4 at the beggining of this year and it was so incerdibly hard, must be even harder trying to find stables for 5 without paying huge amounts of money! good luck :)
 
Not so very long ago people didn't have easy access to meneges or indoor schools. Actually it was a rarity.

We made do perfectly well with hacks, fields etc to bring on young horses. Made full use of PC or RC's or very occassionally used the nearest riding school's facilities (not that you see many of them nowadays!), take young horses hunting and hire XC courses.

It does seem very drastic to think you have to sell your horse just because you haven't got a menege?

I guess its just the way the world has moved forward now although I'm not sure its for the better ;)

Really? most landowners I know are very precious about their ground and quite rightly so. They don't want a horse churning up a paddock which will ultimately either lead to it being ruined for spring or having the expensive maintenance of harrowing and rolling. If the field is wet the horse is going to poach it.

You really don't need an all weather menege to bring on a young horse - many people coped for years before meneges became popular ;)
 
Sorry but if a landowner does not want a horse in a smaller field that is stopping a load of agro for the girl with the other owners in the bigger field and has shut all 3 places to ride at the same time - but still expects full payment of £24 per horse per week - what do you honestly think is the underlying message?

Is the yo prepared to reduce the livery fee? - bet your bottom dollar the answer is no - and if the ground is currently poached then lord only knows what will happen when the bad weather does arrive - no turn out from Oct to Apr ?
 
I absolutely agree with you actually and not for one moment would I imagine the YO to reduce the rent ;) Why would she/he? Its simply not economical to do so.

However, I guess it also depends on what part of the country you live in - here, for example we have had non stop rain for weeks on end, everything is sopping wet and muddy unlike an awful lot of farmers I speak to in other parts of the country that are so dry they have been feeding livestock for weeks :o

LOL - I can't tell you how many hours I have spent treading in divots in the fields ;)

However, my point was, that the OP felt she had to sell her horse because she did not have a menege or specific area to school in and I wanted to point out that actually that is a luxury and that it really isn't necessary to bring on a young horse :)

hi everyone thanks for all your ideas and opinions forgot to mention we dont have winter turn out! i like in the heart of manchester and have to hack across a motorway bridge and main road to get to any suitable hacking, i said to her that i understood that she didnt want the fields turning up but she must be able to accomodate me some way! answer was no so my search carries on for new stables! . . . Watch this space, it could be a miricle!
 
Alot of people who keep horses in nice rural areas have no idea what it is like for urban and suburban horses. I'm in the Manchester area too and many of the yards I see have way too many horses (nice easy money!) on way too little land with the result that the fields are horse-sick, bald and full of ragwort. I watched a horse systematically trash our winter grazing when it was newly arrived, put straight out onto a wet field and spent the rest of the day doing circuits in gallop with sliding stops. Unfortunately many townie horse owners are frankly bone-idle and aren't interested in minor details like poo-picking, field maintenance and ground conservation so standards go down and down and down and attract the lowest of the low so the standards go down even more. The land owners aren't really interested in improving things as long as they get the rent every week and if you don't like it you know where the door is. Not much fun!
 
prehaps as a short term arrangement, what about loaning out a couple of horses so finding a new yard for 2/3 would be easier than for finding stabling for 5.
 
move yards - not living inner city I have no idea how you will manage to move 5 horses easily.

How far away do you live from somewhere rural/semi rural where they maybe a farmer willing to rent out a field to you?
