My lovely Toller has started digging, lots. Now this wouldn't be a problem, except he's digging to get out of the garden.

He has a dog door so that he can get in and out as he pleases, and before the digging started this was fine. However, it now stays locked and he has to be 'babysat' if going outside, or put on the lead.

Now the only reasons why I can see this has started is because:

1. We lost a dog in March who was his companion.
2. A family moved in next door in May, and they have a dog.

The couple of times he's dug out, he's managed to play with this dog, so in effect a big reward for getting out.

I'm worried that he'll get out onto the road, or end up getting lost. I also don't want to be a nuisance to my neighbors and I'd like him to be able to be left with the door door open as much as possible.

Any ideas?

I want to get another dog, but OH says that with a baby on the way (Due December) we'd be nuts to get one. I, on the other hand think that he needs company and as I'm not really working at the minute it would be an ideal time to get a friend for him and make sure they settle together.

I've arranged a 'play date' with another dog tomorrow so they can both burn off some energy in my back garden for a couple of hours. (holes are all filled in and blocked off)

LOL well that answers the question I just posted on your post in photo gallery!!!

Sounds like he is bored, so is making his own entertainment!!! My friend has two tollers, so I know how intelligent and active these dogs are.

Haha yes, he is a Toller and normally very well behaved.

He gets walked twice a day, and with me home 5 days and week (and OH the other 2) he has constant human company and interaction. We also do obedience training in the evening, so I've no idea how else to keep him entertained.

Hopefully the 'play date' will help tomorrow, but I think it's a short term solution.

Could you do some retrieves (whilst you’re out walking)? Anything, which will mentally tire him (you will never physically wear him out)!!!! Good luck. For what it’s worth, I think a doggy friend would help, they can entertain each other then.

Agree with you're OH it would be a bit crazy to get a pup....but I dont think you would have too much trouble with an older dog

I'm going to ring the vets tomorrow and see what they think about the fact he is 'intact'. I've never considered getting him done before as he's not aggressive, not overly energetic, doesn't erm 'hump' things, mark his territory etc. It's just his digging and trying to get to other dogs that's an issue. Plus we have to speak to his breeder about getting him neutered.

Unless next door have an in season bitch I would have thought it's company he is after, esp as this only started once he was alone.

Of course worth exploring every other avenue first and there is no garentee a friend will stop it,but I would bet thats what the trouble is.

Good luck and congrats on you're pregnancy!
