After a visit from the vet yesterday I found out my boy has the start of arthiritis in his hind legs....He's only 15

Is this common in horses around this age? He has had a very steady life so far. Vet has recommended Glucosamine, are there any supplements you have found have helped a horse with arthiritis?

I have a mare with arthritis, she is 21. I have been using a magnetic rug which does seem to have made a difference.

My horse was only 13 when he was diagnosed, I have had him from a foal so knew he had never worked "hard" ect, I think its just one of thoses things & you can only manage it, As much turn out as possible, The Supplements do make a difference, & be care full about the ground you ride on, My horse is fine in cold wet weather, its hard rutted ground he cant cope with! My Boy has it in his Coffin joint. I have him on " Mobifor" there are a huge range of supplements on the Market. He also had 3 HA injections when he was diagnosed, Steroid injections can some times help, depends on each individual case.

my horse was 15 when diagnosed with arthritic changes in his off hock. he wasnt a candidate for steroid injections as vet felt it wouldnt do anything for him .

i have him on a supplement called pernamax maxavita which is kind of like glucosamine but stronger (green lipped mussel extract) . it has worked wonders with him- he's much less stiff, he's on 24/7 turnout and he's ridden about 4 times a week (happy hacking only) to try and keep him supple without stressing the joint.

My boy was 11 when diagnosed. He has it in Near fore pedal bone and both hocks. He now lives out 24/7 and is on glucosamine, hacked approx 5 days a week and is a lot better for it.

Keep him as mobile as possible, and agree with others, just watch the ground you ride on. As much as we hate all this rain, our local hacking is great for Mac at the moment.

My horse got diagnosed with arthritis in his pastern last year when he was 6 after an injury to his suspensory ligament, I didn't have him then but he did a lot of eventing, which I suspect weakened his legs slightly. He's on Mobifor and its brilliant for him, I might start using it with Pernamax as well though. He had about 5 months off after diagnosis which seemed to do him good as well, I'm careful about the ground he's ridden on, he lives out all summer and in winter he comes in at night, I have rubber matting as well to make it more comfortable and warm. He's ridden 5 days a week and doing really well.

My boy was diagnosed with arthritis in his coffin joint at 9 years old

He retired at 13 due to becoming lame more frequently and unpredictable behaviour under saddle. He was then diagnosed with arthritic changes in his spine and hocks. He was PTS a month ago

4 months after retiring

Don't think the same will happen to your horse because lots of horses carry on and compete with arthritis so don't go panicking

rode my mare yesterday and her hock was really clicking i didnt know what it was at first! I have been recommended Equilibra Joint Aid, apparently works wonders and last a long time...so will be purchasing this weekend...its yet something else!

My horse was diagnosed with spavins in her hocks which are the first stages of athritis last year when she was 12.She has had two lots of steroidal and HA injections and after these injections I have had to ride her on danilon as allowing time off to get stiff is the worst thing for athrititis and so I had to work her through it.A year on she is leading as an active life as she did before and though she can come out stiff with work she loosens up and we enjoy doing a bit of everything.I have her on equimins flexijoint and nettle which really seem to help and swear by my biolfow magnetuc leg wraps. When it was first diagnosed I thought it was the end of the world but with management it doesn't need to hold you back at all.
