Arthramid - how long did it take you to see the result?

Those who had arthramid injected for hock arthritis, how long did it take for you to see the result and decide it worked great (or not)?

My gelding was injected 3 weeks ago, since then we did straight lines/hacking/road work with adding a bit of trot here and there which was all good. However just tried to trot in the school and he still felt lame through the corners initially, though after 5 mins warmed up and got a lot better. Which I guess fits the arthritis diagnosis but I was hoping we won't have this initial wonkiness after injections. Not sure what to think of this, whether arthramid needs more time to kick in properly, or horse needs to build up more to get back to school (he's been out of proper work for few months), or is it just that injections didn't work.

We'll be going back to the vets in a week time for re-assessment but I'd be very interested in other people's experiences.

With mine it was about five weeks. I literally noticed no change at all until then and was just thinking it hadn't worked and then suddenly one day it was like ping! We only hack though and even now I wouldn't like to take him into the school as I don't think he'd stand up to it. Obviously your circumstances might be very different to mine so that's not to say that you won't be able to.

My vet said it usually takes 4-6 weeks to kick in so hopefully there's time for you to see a result yet.

I used it for coffin joint arthritis so slightly different but I was told 4 - 6 weeks, it seemed to have worked the first day she came out of the stable she was great but then it deteriorated after that, turned out that she had an already compromised navicular and no amount of Arthramid would have made any difference and in fact made it worse as she had started to overcompensate due to feeling much better with the treatment. So from the point of view of making the Coffin joint better it did work.

I hope your horse improves with time, I'd speak to the vet after 6 weeks if no great improvement.

We had our guy injected after his steroid injections stopped working for long enough.
My vet said it could take up to 2-3 months for full effect. It's slower to act than the steroids but lasts much longer (hopefully!)
He's definitely sound and is holding his condition much better which has always been a giveaway to any discomfort in the past.
I'd definitely use it again, in the right situation

May I ask how old your horse is? I'm wondering whether to try arthramid as a last resort with my 20 year old. Her first steroid injection seemed to work but the most recent one hasn't, and she's now lame again.

Mine's 10. Don't be put off by my bad example though, I know of few horses where arthramid helped a lot.
