As title says on one of the hinds it appears to click and give way and he seems to walk a bit on his toes. Then suddenly it goes all normal. He does have arthritis degeneration and is retired age 23? Any idea as not sure if I should call vet?? He doesnt appear to be in any pain his feet seem fine. Lives out 24/7.

Would glucosamine be ok too? or help? I dont mind having simple things treated but due to his age etc I would have PTS if serious ..he doesnt load well and had tons of xrays about 5 years ago.

I just want him to have a few years of field retirement. But am suprised this problem has suddenly appeared. Any ideas what it is? It looks a bit like when your ankle gives way etc then corrects itself.

Thank you

Bump??? any idea just more arthritis do you think???

Yes, it is just like your ankle giving. Our 20 year old has this. He is still in ridden work. It doesn't bother him in the slightest. If he is having a day when this happens, we don't go out of walk. Vet friend who rides him says nothing to worry about.

Have a look at this web site http://www.dsldequine.info/ see if anything else rings a bell in the symptoms section

Hi yes it sounds quite like this. I had a good feel around the lower hind leg and on the inside of the lower limb(near fetlock) it felt like a fatty lump quite soft and moveable. My gut instinct was a capsule ie from an inflammation of a joint capsule??? I know this sounds daft. He is quite happy. Am certain not abscess etc). Hooves not hot etc.

I do keep thinking will I end up having him PTS as am worried I will find him down, as he gets really stressed being loaded for vets and is elderly and I dont want him pulled around at a vets. However if its just a case of a course of medication or anti inflammatories/pain relief I am happy to do this as he really is a nice old boy and no trouble. I enjoy looking after him but its whats best for him at end of day.

Am watching his weight as he is a good doer so good to read about watching the sugar(he has nothing but grass or hay and an old fashioned mineral lick. Lives out 24/7 unrugged). But thanks this was very useful. He is a cob and has got arthritis in both back legs from being driven..probably hard and is very heavy type. Thank you for this info.

Doesn't sound daft at all. My boy is 23 and he has fairly certain symptoms of it. I joined the Yahoo group herb trial it mentions on the site. It made a lot of difference to him within a few days.

What I learnt from the beginning is that sugar in the diet does not help the condition and my gelding was diagnosed with Cushings in 2009 because of mystery lameness which got much worse in the spring and summer. I believe it was the sugar in the grass which made his DSLD worse and it looked like he was lame. My vet will not even consider my findings and insists he is sore footed because he is barefoot, and because there is no treatment, and because the regime is the same for Cushings i.e. low sugar diet, I just treat him myself.
If you need any further help, please pm me
Good luck
