Hi,

Hoping you guys can give me any advice on how you have managed your veterans with arthritis.

I look after a 30yo Tb who for his age is in remarkable health, apart from arthritis, this hasn't been too bad in all honesty until the last 12 months.
On a few occasions overnight he has lay down and is still down in the morning. He actually can't get up. The vet has been checked him over and said he is basically getting a dead leg from lying down, it is all linked to his arthritis. Yesterday was pretty bad but once up and he has feeling back he sprints out the stable like he knows he needs to get moving. Luckily he seems to understand what's wrong and just lies there looking at you for help, no stressing at all.

I want to see if there is anything I can do to help relieve the arthritis or improve his circulation. I don't really want to start down the bute route just yet as he only really has problems when he lies down too long.

I know in a ideal world he would live out but we do not have the facilities, long term I may need to look at moving him but that will mean having 2 horses at 2 different places, plus I am worried that at his age it may be too much of a shock, so again I want to try and avoid for now.

Any my ideas or experiences appreciated

Thanks

May I suggest you try him on the Turmeric, oil (I use micronised linseed)and black pepper regime. I f you join the Turmeric User Group on Facebook under the Files section there is a wealth of information. It really works my veteran mare is going like a roocket since being on it all signs of her arthritis gone. The best thing is it is cheap.

If you haven't room to have him turned out all the time could you make a yard outside his stable so he still has the room to wander about a little to help him keep from getting so stiff?
