My mare has been diagnosed with arthritis and bursitis in her hock. Her hock on the inside is now huge and she is still ever so slightly lame. She has to be turned out for the next 2 wks, on danilon, see how she is and then possible medicate the joint. The arthritis I expect as she is an ex-eventer, but never had to deal with bursitis,(its not a capped hock).
Has anyone else had this with their horse? Thanks

Is there more than one bursa in the hock?

THE bursa is at the point of the hock and a capped hock is a
bursal enlargement/distension at the POH, although there is often external damage to the skin from scraping and impact.

Arthritis at the hock usually affects the lower three joints as a bone spavin but is not likely to result in a huge swelling, however the uppermost joint will swell in the way you have described if injury or over-use cause it to produce a surplus of synovial fluid in the membrane surrounding the whole set of joints.

Bursa and bog spavin problems will sort themselves out with time and light work.
