Arthritis and Muscle Spasm

My cushings pony has arthritis in her stifle. She went lame on that leg yesterday and when I was feeling around I found the muscles in the flank were rock hard. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Its easing off a bit now but I am wondering what might have caused this. Vet is here on Friday so will ask her but was interested to know what other people have experienced.

Any pain can cause the muscles to spasm, keep gently massaging the area to help relax it if you can, if you can get her looked at by a physio it should help release the tension and they will also be able to advise you on how to help longer term.

Thanks for replying. I think it is easing, she is walking much better now. I will get someone out to have a look at her.
