Hello, today I have seen a wonderful horse for loan and am considerjng enquiring however, she has arthritis in her coffin joint. Advert says that she can still hack(we are only a hacking home and are not interested in school work, just hacking). She is only 15. My question is, would it be a risk taking on a horse with arthritis, espscially on loan? And is she likely to be lame after every hack, needing injections, would she be costly ect?

In regards to the vet I am unsure. I havent enquired about this mare yet as I dont want to waste the ladys time.

Her advert says she is in full health minus her arthritis and is on no medication...

Depends on the severity of it. I’d want to see x-rays, etc and possibly have a chat with the Vet. Working on hard ground usually makes the arthritis worse. Unfortunately a lot of coffin joint arthritis goes hand in hand with Navicular so again it would depend on how bad it is and what the owners are currently doing to manage it. If managed correctly though, there is no reason why horse couldn’t be suitable for hacking. Also, get a contract drawn up stating what you are and aren’t responsible for paying for.

Thankyou, I will give the owner a message to discuss.

It's certainly worth enquiring.

I've got a horse who had early arthritic changes in both of her front coffins who responded very well to arthramid gel injections. I wouldn't expect a loaner to fund those, but there are options out there if the owner is on board.

Good luck.
