Hi all

I’m looking for some advice please. Would you knowingly buy a pony that has confirmed and diagnosed arthritis of the fetlocks/pasterns (X-ray confirmation). Would this put you off buying? Also what are your personal experiences with owning a horse that has this condition including treatment and £cost?

The horse is to be ridden as a pony club allrounder SJ, XC, dressage, hacking and possibly some BE. Ponies age is 9 and currently jumping regularly 1m and 1.10m.

Thanks in advance.

I think it would be too much to ask (allrounder/BE) from a 9 year old with those conditions already.

Perhaps he is sound at the moment jumping 1m or so regularly, but under what kind of management and how long can that go on/work for?

Just wouldn't be something for me unless the cost was was low or null, and I would be prepared to possibly end up with a horse with little longevity as far as riding is concerned.

Also, when did this develop? How did it develop/at what rate? Are there any previous x-rays to take a look at?

No, no way. Sorry. I saw an advert yesterday for a horse with confirmed but treated navicular. Considerable price drop but even so. It's just not worth it with the cost of remedial shoeing and having to pull out of events due to hard ground at the last minute.
