I have a Boarder here who wants to give her mare something for her mildly arthriticky legs but doesn't want to go down the injection route yet.
22 yo QH, lives out 24/7 by the way.

Online research has only confused the heck out of her, so many things saying "We are the best, buy this"

So, I thought I'd ask what you all use, supplement wise, particularly herbal mixes, potions and lotions etc.

Thanks.

i've just started giving my 24yr old mare equine america cortaflex, as i read it's not much good just feeding glocosamine as it should also be fed with chondrotin, which is what EA cortaflex is.
haven't noticed much improvement yet but it's only been a week or so.

I`ve had my boy on EA cortaflex for probably six months or so now and can honestly say that I see and feel a big difference in him; he`s much freer in his movement. I`m a sceptic about most supplements but have to conclude that this has made a difference as nothing else has changed. Think I should start taking it myself!

I have my boy on recovery eq and vetrofen he has collatral ligament problems and coffin joint problems touch wood still sound

I use Equine Answers Premier flex HA with devils claw. It has a similiar spec to cortaflex, with the devils claw in addition, so saves having to buy the 2 supplements separately. It is very economical too and has made a real difference to my cob's hock arthritis.

Brilliant stuff and the only joint supplement which made a difference to my pony.

Newmarket Joint Supplement(Glucosamine HCL) or Cortaflex have worked the best on my horses.

Sorry to bang on again about good herbalists making up specific mixes rather than supplements which use less quality herbs that arent as fresh and include bulking agents in their supplements.........

I started my mare with arthritic knees (she was lame as a duck in walk when taken off Danilon and couldnt trot in the field after her chums or turn corner into the stable) on a herbalist mix and 6 weeks later she is being ridden on the flat in all paes. 2 months we have had 2 lessons and the instructor says there are no signs of her being sore as we bomb about and she is going better than did before the diagnosis!! I agree her paces are freer and now she wants to work long and low and rounded - here is a video of yesterday -

The herbs include devils claw, meadowsweet, nettles, camomile, rosehip and lots more but you need to have the right amounts of these and sometimesthe herbs arent compatible and cancel each other out so you need an expert to make a mix for you!! I now have our new boy on a joint/splint mix cos although he is sound he has a large splint from racing and want to keep him sound with no joint issues.

I use cortaflex and a splash of cod liver oil on my mare, I put her on it the day I bought her as she was 16 she showed no signs of stiffness so wanted to protect and slow down any changes that were happening in her joints.
Wether they are working I do not know I have never taken her off them, but at 21 she is going just as good as the day I bought her. There are so many products out there stating how good they are and are better than the rest, I advise you ask your vet/farrier about what other people use and wether they are value for money.
My farrier always says how supple my mare is when picking up her legs to shoe, and he said he can usually feel stiffness when shoeing older horses, so your farrier maybe a good person to ask as he may know what his clients with older horses are using.

I also use Equine Answers Premier Flex Plus with Devils Claw direct from their website. I am pleased with the results, I have been feeding it to my mare for over a year maybe longer. Its cost effective, and my mare is happier and moves more easily

:-)

Where do you get your herb's mix from???

From a private herbalist in England who arent a big company cos just lady and her hubby making the mixes - they were offered money for them from big known companies I wont mention incase get sued lol but wouldnt change recipe to cheaper herbs so produce them themselves for people by word of mouth. I ws recommended them by a friend who used them for arthritic knees with success.

I cant pass on their contact as ther books are full although I would love to sing their praises to everyone in my boat and help thier horse but they say if contact a good herbalist then should be able to make up a mix xxxx

Hi - I used cosequin, cider vinegar and cod liver oil on my old lad. I noticed a huge difference in him.
