I have a 30 year old horse and he has bad arthritis in his knees and legs, back and front. He has been on bute for about a year now(1 a day)prescribed by the vet,but id like to know if anyone can recommend any good supplements? The bute has an effect but he is still very achy and stiff, and id like to know if there are any good products to help synovial fluid.Any brand names?and products people have used.Any help much appreciated!thanks.

Hi , my 34 year old isnt too bad , a little stiff when she's been in overnight etc but she isnt on anything but she does have danilon ( rather then bute to ensure no damage to gut ) a couple of times a week , she also has Devils claw which you can use with Danilon . I tried Cortaflex etc etc but nothing seemed to be an obvious benefit so I gave up and she's on Danilon , Devils Claw and Linseed oil ( not codliver as its not natural to horses , you see them fishing ! ) . I think its a case of finding something that works for your horse , some will , some wont . Try natural first , so you can always move up to drugs !

I had my mare on Glucomax Forte from hyperdrug for most of her last years (building up on danilon for last year at 33 years) which she was really good on and made a real difference to her movement; she was very stiff otherwise. They sell a large tub which lasts ages so don't be put off by the price! But agree it is a matter of finding what works best for your horse. Never found Cortaflex do much either and found it worked out more.

The issue with supplements is they they only work to help prevent problems or to an extent stop problems from worsening. They wont fix arthritis.

If your horse already has arthritis and is quite severe i would suggest that the best course of action would be to find a way to relieve the pain. Which the bute should be doing. If it is not then i would suggest talking to your vet to discuss the possibility of upping the dose.

As above poster has said. Danilon is often considered a better option for long term pain control as there are reports of bute having an adverse affect on the gut with long term use.

Would also suggest looking into natural remidies. These can often work wonders. But they seem to work different for different horses.

Some I would consider are: celery seed, devils claw, willow and maybe something like nettle/comfrey to help circulation.

hope that helps

I have tried all sorts at all prices, and realistically only Danilon works. I like to think some new wonder preparation is going to work....but after several months I have to admit defeat.:(

My tb was on Maxavita and it helped him a lot. My vet advised me to retire him (he was 30 and only did light hacking) as he found it difficult to lift his hinds. Within 10 days of using this product he was hugely improved and being ridden again. He was also on 1 Danilon a day. Maxavita is green lipped mussel and I got mine on line.
