I’ve tried Buteless, Thunderbrooks Tumeric and am toying with Protexin Cosequin. Buteless seemed to help, Tumeric about the same.hes currently on this though toying with going back to Buteless as that has it in. Friend has Cosequin but that is expensive.

I’m also doing daily Osteo based on the Osteo paths advice - as he has osteoarthritis in his forelegs. I think this is helping! I do it every day and always before and after I ride ( we just hack mainly)

Any thoughts comments much appreciated!

I might be overthinking it maybe…To be honest he seems just as he was when on buteless. I’ve put off using bute until I need it but just wondered what others do or whether to return to buteless instead of just turmeric which gets everywhere 🤣He doesn’t seem any noticeably stiffer but just takes longer to warm up but I guess that’s to be expected. We do a lot of walking. I wondered if others used an osteopath and whether that had made a difference. I had to ride in the school the other day because everywhere is so wet, a lot of walking before a trot and one canter- just for 20 minutes and he seemed pretty good. I rarely ride in the school apart from loose schooling over the odd poles.

Mine is on Danilon now but before we got to that stage Feedmark's BestFlex HA which contains all the usual things plus Boswellia seemed to help
He also wears magnetic leg wraps. I know many people think they are bogus but the physio noticed how much more flexible he's been since using them

My old Ardennes was on bute because none of the herbal stuff helped.

Microcob does well on bozmerix but if she's over exerted herself on a ride (she can be a bit naughty!) then she gets a measure of NAF devil's relief.

Big mare (awful hocks plus PSSM) showed no response to bozmerix but CBD is really helping. CBD sends the microcob sleepy (my farrier would say stoned!) so she only gets it on farrier days.

Just put our 18yo standie on 1x danilon a day. Previously had him of devil's claw which worked fairly well however he developed ulcers last winter and devils claw was no longer appropriate.
When looking in to other supplements and discussing it with my vet, we decided it would be more cost effective to give him 1x danilon per day. He was much improved on devil's claw although not 100%, however the danilon seems to have worked wonders and I am really pleased with how well he's doing. It has worked better than any supplement to be honest and is actually more cost effective for me personally.

Boswellia.

- Gave my TB a retirement she could enjoy, right up until her spine calcified sufficiently to give her neurological issues. 9 years (a bit before retirement and the rest in) with no side effects.
- Kept my dog moving and able to jump on/off the sofa until the end - without it, she was visibly lame.
- Is currently keeping my elderly shetland alive. She cannot stop work for metabolic reasons, but isn’t quite comfortable without the boswellia. With it, she’s speedy and happy, her usual cheeky self.

Mine is 1/2 a Danilon. I have also just bought some magnetic wraps, because her back legs do fill and not only has the puffiness gone, but she's moving better too. I bought them on the basis they couldn't do any harm, but wasn't expecting such an obvious improvement.

If you want to try something cheaper, I'd also recommend Boswellia. I just found that by the time I'd tried all the supplements, its was actually cheaper to give her Danilon.

My 24 year is on a Cartrophen every other month and devils claw each day. We still hack out a few days a week.

There is only one joint supplement that I have found that works, tried and tested on my horses, livery horses, and my donkey.

Equimins Flexi Joint - difference is the ingredients - including shark cartilage. Read the reviews my mare came off bute for life once on it https://www.equimins-online.com/products/equimins-flexijoint-cartilage-supplement

My arthritic Welsh is retired now but turned out as much as possible and I long rein hack him all over the spot. i swap and change depending on how he's feeling and the time and the weather. I try keep him on AE buteless most of the time but when the ground is hard or boggy, he goes onto a bute a day instead.

Spring and autumn are his best times as the spongy ground is perfect for him :)

Devil's claw + boswellia have been good for mine, plus increasing turnout hours to include at least 1 if not 2 24 hour stints a week and a minimum of 12 hours per day. Thankfully my yard offers this, I know lots can't, particularly in winter.

I am personally very conflicted about the ethics of feeding shark cartilage and would want some very clear statements about provenance & fishing practices from the manufacturer.

Thanks all is botswellia in buteless?

Interestingly no one has mentioned cosequin wondered if it is just too expensive or no results.

At the minute I’m also contending with weight gain as the grass is still growing

Fair enough - I am vegetarian so don't normally feed any animal products to my horses including cod liver oil which people don't seemed to have a problem with.

My mare improved 100% and came off bute so I know it works and seen many liveries improve.

So many animals are killed cruelly for medicine and animal testing etc. They also kill sharks for shark fin soup. It boils down to what it is used for and the results and if it is the only thing that gave my mare a pain free life( which it did) Then I would use it and do.

It wasn't aimed at you personally.

However I do think finning is abhorrent and inexcusable. I don't think people necessarily realise where their products come from and what it entails.

No I know you were not aiming it at me, I was just pointing out the human race is cruel in many ways how they use animals

Haven’t used it myself but friends horse had really good results with firocoxib. They started using it once hock steroid injections weren’t effective

Yes Equine America buteless contains botswellia. It did take the edge off and I used alongside devil's claw for a few winters. Like most things its trial and error. My friend swears by glucosamine but it did nothing for my lad 🤷‍♀️

NutriScience ArthriAid and boswellia. It's the only joint supplement that I've noticed a difference with. I fed boswellia on it's own before with not much difference but the ArthriAid has been amazing so just feed both!

My mare has no supplements as none of them made a difference to her. She has 24/7 turnout, however if the ground is really hard she’ll stand in for half the day or so as she finds the hard ground difficult. If she’s particularly sore she’ll have bute.

All shark cartilage provides is chondroitin, which is easily obtained through less dubious means (Such as the cartilage of cows and pigs, or even made in a lab). There's no need to use Shark Cartlidge, and why a company would boast about it beyond me, well, besides the snake oil salesmen that often peddle the stuff as a magical cancer cure.

@OP - If it's the 23 year old you mention in your previous posts, just give the poor bugger the bute/danilon. You (hopefully) wouldn't deny your arthritic granny her pain meds and tell her to eat some turmeric instead. Check with your vet what you can supplement alongside it if you want.
