Hi

I was just wondering what knowledge of any treatments/drugs for arthritis anyone has. My mare is currently on bute and premier flex plus. Is there anything else avaliable? better?

Any advice would be greatly received :-)

xXx

My girl is retired with severe arthritis in one knee (and mild in other joints). She has been on one sachet of bute and a measure of Cortaflex for 4 or 5 years and seems to cope fine. Her bad knee is very very stiff still so I am not sure of the impact of the Cortaflex, but as she is doing well we have kept on with it.

We also have a retired pony who is slightly arthritic and has been on Cortaflex for several months now. I have to say that he is looking the best he has looked for a while and does seem less stiff.

My 18 yr old mare was diagnosed with arthritis of the high hock joint (apparently quite rare) in her back right, and low ringbone inboth fronts about 3 years ago. During intial diagnosis the vet thought spavin and medicated the joint with a steroid injection. This didn't work but after finally getting to the bottom of the problems, she had a course of cartraphen injections, (4 injections, 1 a week). This made a world of difference to her, combinded with remideal shoeing and trial and error with joint supplements to find NAF m.s.m. Since she was diagnosed and had the first course of cartrophen she has only had 1 more course 12 months ago. I have heard of horses needing these 6 monthly to yearly, but corrie seems to go quite a lot longer than that. The injections are expensive, but, for my horse, they are money well spent.
Since being diagnosed and treated, corrie has gone on and done a few local prelim dressage tests, which she had never gone well enough before to contemplate doing, and only once was there a mention of stiffness/ unlevelness.
