My 16 year old welsh section D 15.2hh cob has had a clicking at the top of his bum for the past 4 years, this got worse last summer and he went lame on the leg that had the click in it. My vet thinks it could be arthritis but because it is probably at the top of his bum he would have to go away to have an x-ray which he said he wasn't keen to do as my horse is very highly strung and nervous. He can be slightly lame some days but charges around the field without fuss. We left it with my vet that he can be lightly exercised as due to his nature, box rest or even being turned away wasn't suiting him. However, the clicking sound has got louder and only seems to be heard when he is on the left rein (it is the left hind that he is lame on) and only when in a trot. At a walk there is no sound nor when cantering. When riding along the road so in a straight line there is no sound at all. He popped some poles on the floor today (in error) and kept trying to go back over them, without a problem. So he is very well in himself. The clicking nose though is troubling me, it is such a horrible loud sound, so much so that I end up changing the rein. He is on glucosamine and my vet gave me bute to give him each time I want to exercise him. My vet didn't seem particularly interested in the whole situation though. Furthermore, since he went lame when picking out that hoof it takes him ages to put the hoof back down on the floor. He holds it up and then slowly brings it down. The clicking sound, being unable to put the hoof down and the lameness are obviously all related. Has anybody else heard of this problem? Any ideas?
