Hi all,

I don't venture in here often but I'm looking for some advice.

Our 8yo rescue dog has arthritus in both hips, he is on Metacam & Tramidol. He gets codliver oil but I'm after a good arthritus supplement too. So looking for some reccomendations.

We think he is some sort of lab/GS or rottie mix, we got him at 9 months old & he had already had a hard life and had clearly been on the end of a kicking from some delightful dreg of society.

From a horsey point of view I know that Cortaflex & Nupafeed both do dog supplements, Cortaflex being more chondroitin/GSM & HA orientated & Nupafeed green lipped mussel.

Also there was an article in the vet section our local paper about a human supplement called Seatone(I think), another GLM based product, but I'm obviously wary of feeding human medication to dogs.

So what do I need to look for/avoid?

Any ideas/advice appreciated.

There are others better qualified than me on the strengths etc but while I am waiting to find out what is happening with my staffie he was put on the pedigree chews which have glucosamine, green mussel powder and lipotin (sp). One thing that did work with 3 different arthritc dogs though was the bioflow magnetic collar - it really did make a massive difference.

NAF do a dog equivalent of their horse one called superflex I think it is

I used to use one called joint aid, it was little pellets to add to food

Oooh I forgot about NAF, I had my ex eventer on there 5* product but didn't realise they did dog supplements too.

Luci, I was also thinking about a bio flow collar.

Thanks

I would highly recommend getting Pentosan injections. My girl (left in siggy pics) was almost crippled with arthritis in the elbow and after a course of jabs came completely sound again. You start off getting 4 infections a week apart and then a booster every three months after that. It works best if they get an oral glucosamine as well (I use a product called Lubrisyn, don't know if you get it in the UK). My SIL put her 8 year old goldie onto the Pent too and can't believe the difference.

As far as glucoamine product go what you want to look for with dogs is a mixture of glucosamine and chondroitin. The source of the glucosamine should be green lipped mussels as that is the purest form. Human gluc/chondroitin should be fine for dogs. :-)

Paddockornament - thank you, I have never heard of Pentosan & it has never been mentioned by our vet which is odd. Also I had no idea that glucosamine was from GLM! :o

Is the cod liver oil you are using cold pressed? If not he will not be getting the best from it as it has been cooked. I would change his diet to raw as it would really help in his case and will also give the best support to any supplements you chose to aid the condition as they are not then fighting the diet as well.

In any case avoid foods high in grains and carbohydrate and feed some fish like sardines for the correct omiga's for dogs. Also avoid vegetable based supplements as they probably won't aid a dog as well as animal based products. Though I have found professional herbalists and homoeopaths are good for these types of condition in the past.

OK mine has just been diagonised as having arthritic changes in his elbows. I will put more info in my post as have a lot of questions but re: Cortaflex - I have just been out and bought the canine version and this does have a very high dose of Chrondroitin and glucosamine.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are the best things for joints. My 13 year old is on Vetzyme High Strength Joint Tablets and they really seem to work for her. I briefly used Joint Aid for Dogs but it didn't seem to have any effect on her. Vetzyme works well and is a fraction of the price that they charge for Cortaflex and probably NAF joint supplements.

My Lurcher who had a Cruciate Ligament op few months back and was doing the terrier 3 leg hop is now off previcox and just gets her daily supp of Mobile Bones (made by Pooch & Mutt which is linked to Blue Chip) and plenty of Cod Liver Oil. Has the odd stiff day if she's been a bit mad but other than that looking good.
