Has anyone had a horse that has stay in work when in Afib? My horse is full of life and it doesn't effect her, have heard lots of bad stories thank you
My mare went into Afib at the end of last year, we discovered it really quickly within days as I had only just had her vetted (to buy) and we think the stress of travelling/moving etc may have brought it on. I had it converted with electrical cardioversion which insurance didn't cover as I had only owned her a few days but ordinarily it would have! The most important thing to assess is if she's safe to be ridden whilst in AF. She would need a full cardio workup to determine if there was underlying heart disease (which is unusual) and also to assess her exercise tolerance (just noticed she's been seen by a specialist). Have you thought about having it converted? Without the work up you wont know how fast her heart is having to beat to compensate whilst exercising. Some horses whilst in Afib have atrial premature complexes which are linked to sudden death so some horses are deemed not suitable to be ridden at any level. It's really best to get it assessed with exercise tolerance test and ECG and ultrasound.
She has had an ECG and I have been told she is safe to ride but not to event her... I don't jump anyway if I do its tiny and she is the total opposite of an event horse. The vets think it is long standing so isn't a good candidate for conversion... I have been doing a lot of work with her three day camps fast hacking etc and she has been fine. I feel bad as I didn't notice. Oh and no heart disease present.
