is AI a good idea for a maiden mare?she can be very marish and funny about her back end when in season, so considering it instead of taking her to a stallion (next year). good idea or not?
It's a good plan. Gives you a chance to assess her properly beforehand as well, rather than just letting a stallion leap on her. The hymen will still be intact, so probably best to get an experienced AI tech or vet to break it. Go for it though - you will learn a lot about her this way
i have opted for natural for my mares 1st. i had a long in-depth conversation with my vet about it, his opinion is for the 1st natural but i had already made that decision myself, i remember years ago my friend went thru the AI or natural - and actually ended up doing neither but she didnt want her to be covered natirally, but didnt think the mare would understand what was happening without the 'jiggyjiggy'
i think it all depends on the mare as an indivdual, if as you say she can be funny around her back end when in season i would definatley opt for AI as its not worth the risk of your mare, the stallion or handler getting harmed - mine are ok as they are hussies!
what stallions have you been looking at?
we havent been looking at any stallions yet but thinking a nice warmblood type that has as good jumping record to rty and get a foal to reach hopefully over 15:2 that i can jump one day!think AI mite be best for her as want to avoid any injuries but am abit worried about her not understanding wats happining to her especially when she goes into labour
Both of my mares were maiden and both got in-foal by AI. One got in-foal first time, with twins, but one was successfully pinched. The other mare, Bramble, got in-foal, then re-absorbed, then didn't take and then finally got in-foal.
I wasn't given a choice with my mare, she was 13 and I had 5 stallions jump on her (from 14.2's to 17hh, she's 16hh) and none could do it, so she was sent to twemlows and ai'ed which worked. She has now been covered naturally though and is in foal again. The miracle was that she took 1st time ai'ed and that she only had one overy and the stallion had one testicle hence the foals showname one 2 one!
Mine was a maiden & AI'd I can assure you she is a great mum & it made not difference to her missing out on the "Jiggyjiggy". I dont think animals connect that with being pregnant to be honest.
Magic you are quite right - there is no way that a mare makes the connection between having a baby and something that happened 11 months before!
Even we humans don't make the connection between sex and pregnancy automatically - we have to have it explained to us by our parents or in sex-education classes!
So there is absolutely no cause for concern about this - she may be a good or a bad mother (they do vary, although the vast majority are good) but it will have nothing to do with whether the foal was conceived by AI or natural covering.
I have always been led to believe that if a mare is AI'd as a maiden, you could, potentially, have a devil of a job to cover her naturally with a foal at foot next time. Having never seen a stallion before she could be especially protective of her foal and therefore aggressive towards him to the point of him possibly not being able to cover her. It does make sense to me and have, therefore, always had a maiden covered naturally as you never know if you are going to want to use a stallion that won't do AI. AI is then always an option in the future.
Has anyone had problems with a natural covering on a mare with a first foal at foot by AI ?? (Or not!)

That can never be proved though, the mare may well have reacted like that regardless of being covered naturally or AI'd. Because the mare is a 1st time mother, no one can predict how she will/would react as there is nothing to judge against.
