How many of us are so passionate about human rights as we all so clearly are about those of equines?

I ask purely from curiosity and with no agenda or opinion on what is right or wrong.

Do you donate to charity and if so is it animal based or to someone like Oxfam, save the children etc?

Do you campaign/sign petitions for both or one or the other?

If you are truly offended by someone asking the price of horse meat does the ten o clock news rile you up too? There are so many pointless deaths all around the globe, so much suffering, starvation and abuse.

Please be nice to each other. I don't want a fight, they upset me :)

I am passionate about human rights as well as animals and the 9 o'clock news does make me angry! I regularly donate (funds permitting) to Shelter and The Brooke.

Good point and tbh getting angry and upsetting each other doesn't get any of us any further forward. I'm learning to stay off those sort of threads I'm tired of fighting and being 'right'! :p Or rather, feeling that I have to convince others that my way is best.

I feel the same about all animals or I aspire to. My cats bringing in dead birds and assorted small mammals does make me waver! If any thing I'm fed up with humans calling the shots all the time to the detriment of other species etc. and I'm glad I've lived now and not in the future where we may have little 'wildness' and diversity.

I donate and sign petitions for animals all the time and the reason for my choosing to do this is because all people charities are already funded by the government whilst animal charities rely on donations. What i find very upsetting is the environment that i work in which employs 100's of staff and their sole employment is horses do not donate or fund raise for animals and only do so for people.......surely you have to give back, to what pays for you to sleep warm at night

I think I am. I dislike racism or lack of understanding of other cultues and I try to be open minded.
I am also very practical :o
Me and my housemates were watching the zoo yesterday on telly, a baby penguin had been rejected by its parents so was hand reared. Turned out to be deformed 6 weeks later. I shocked them by saying it shouldn't of been hand reared but PTS. I went on further to say it could of been food for a seal (that eats penguins obvs) or a killer whale etc.
They said only animals bred for meat should be used for food.
My arguement for the meat man post and them is why waste of life? If the horse/penguin/cow has died use it to give life (in the way of dog/killerwhale etc food).

I think I must just be dead inside. Although I watched an awful documentary recently about the Rwanda genocides which really turned my stomach most things don't get to me.

I donate to Oxfam and save the children but no animal charities.

I donate to both, but humans (and their rights) would come first everytime if I had to choose, particularly children in war zones, we are all living in comfort ( roof over head, clothes on backs, food, computers) simply through an accident of birth and should count our lucky stars each and everyday that we are where we are and not in some tent scavenging for food. Far too much moaning and whinging going on, I've spent most of the day looking for my cell phone, really though, so what, it's just a lump of plastic, not important in the grand scheme of things.

It would be a person I pulled out of a burning building first, not an animal.

One of my brothers works for Save the Children, he travels all over Africa and to anywhere he is needed, floods, famines, earthquakes, you name it he has seen it and it is taking its' toll on him. I think there is only so much misery one can deal with before shutting down emotionally (I am sure animal rescue workers and the like are similar)

Once my daughter is old enough to do her own thing, then I will be off to do VSOS.

Human rights would be top of my list, particuarly those of children, or the vunerable like disabled people or the elderly. But I also have strong beliefs in animal rights and like humans believe they deserve to be treated with decency and respect.
I sponsor child in Ethiopia through World Vision but also always try and give to the likes of world horse welfare.
I would sign any petition regardless of human or animal if I believed either were being mistreated or abused.

As for news, I dont watch it, dont watch TV at all for that matter, I find it to depressing :(
I do read news on line though, I dont know why but I find it easier to digest reading it rather than seeing disturbing images. Its not that it makes it any less real, it just means I dont go to sleep with awful images in my head x

I believe life has value.

We donate to NAS, Dogs Trust, British Red Cross and our local horse rescue.

That being said, in the event of complete and sudden economical breakdown, if my children were hungry, we would eat the horse and the dog.

I would donate to human charities over animal charities every time. As Enfys says, it is only by a lucky accident of birth that we have so much and such stability compared to the majority of the world's population.

I suppose seeing the injustice and suffering which people endure all over the world makes me sad in the same way as animal cruelty.

What riles me is not so much that all this goes on, it is more the ignorant, arrogant, overbearing and narrowminded opinions that a lot of people harbour, based on no actual knowledge or experience, but on propoganda. This is fuelled by the sensationalist and irresponsible media. This riles me! Whether it is senseless propoganda against horse abbatoirs or fox hunting, or this BNP rubbish the Daily Mail is so fond of, it's that judgemental 'holier than thou' attitude which gets me.

I don't watch it much either. I find the pictures sensationalise the matter and actually detract from it. I can not stand it when a journalist is standing over a dead body and trying to get an interview from the literally grief stricken parents two seconds after it happens. All I can think is 'p*ss off you vulture' which stops me computing the actual news story as a whole.

I donate to The Brooke, every month, by standing order. I think the Human Rights Act has taken things too far. There are two essential principles to the Human Rights Act. One of them is "Everyone has the right to a fair trial"- correct, but who in reality gets a fair trial when the stories of murders and other crimes have been printed and reported by the press? The other one is that "everyone has the right to a private and family life" - this I don't believe in. If the private life involves crime and abuse, then no, they do not have a right to it. I do not believe that prisoners have a "right" to a vote and I do believe there should be a cap on immigration.
So I couldn't give a crap about Human Rights, however I do have morals and I live by those.

Apparently more people in this country donate to animal charities than children's charities!

in fairness - my horse makes me far happier than my teenage daughter

its tongue in cheek - honest:)
I have spent the last 30 yrs woirking in inner city schools & community charities - so hope that i have managed to put a little something back & certainly working with asylum seekers/refugees/survivors of genocide/domestic violence/sexual abuse makes me very aware of how lucky i am & how important that all lives are
