As Far As Freak Injuries Go ... (*Graphic Photos*)

That is horrific. Will she ever recover fully? God and how will that heal...

Poor thing, vibes for her ((()))

Crikey, what a nasty accident. Hope poor horse recovers OK.

Sorry I don't mean to be flippant but ouch!! Poor horse

But lucky too as that could have been even worse

Any idea how long its going to take to heal?

Sorry had to go off.

Horse is to be kept outside. Vet does not want horse in stable or anywhere with walls. Flies not an issue apparently as they only feed on dead skin. No covering, vets wants it left open. Tonnes of anti-b's and painkillers.

Horse is fine. Immediately after injuring herself, she started eating and was not perturbed in the slightest.

Skin will end up covering up the dip. The hole is about the size of a tennis ball around, however some skin survived and is covering part of the missing skull. The depth of the hole is the length of a hand, so it goes downwards about 5 inches. Cavity is probably about the size of a fist.

Frickin' freaky that's for sure! And thankfully hit the post on her sinuses rather than hitting her brain. Brain is quite a bit further up from the area injured.

I've just been down with her and she is munching and quite happy in her paddock.

it is amazing how they get on with it when they are badly hurt! Horses are tough! I bet she heals up perfectly as long as you are fighting infection! She will be scared that's for sure

poor horsie

No she's not scared in the slightest. She wasn't even scared when it happened, she was acting perfectly normally except a slight irritation of the serum dripping down her nose.

Every time I go outside, she calls to me in her normal manner; ears pricked and happy to wander about after me. BTW; this is the vicious horse - the very last horse I would ever want to have to be doing nursing duties on! However, she is going through a nice patch right now so hoping I will be able to perform all duties and still get out of there alive!

I've known two with significant skull fractures - one from being kicked, one ran into a bale feeder - who both healed up a little dented but otherwise right as rain. I've known a few other horses that seemed to bear the scars of significant head injuries but were otherwise fine (expect for one that broke his jaw as well and had serious behavioural issues that I'm sure were pain related). It seems to be one of the things that seem horrific but heal up surprisingly well, perhaps because the brain is so well protected a lot of external damage can be done before it's neurological as well.

Necks on the other hand . . . I've known two that broke their necks and survived but were never right again. One ran into a gate and got his head stuck, the other slipped in a turn and hit a fence post. I've suspected more than a few other horses with behavioural issues of having similar problems in their past. Makes you wonder what happens when there's no one there to see it . . .

Glad the mare seems to be hanging in there. Interesting that it's the mare that's had all the problems . . . makes you wonder if there's a visual/neurological component to her other woes. It might even help in a weird way - I've known more than one "iffy" horse turn a corner when it needed sustained nursing. (Just like My Friend Flicka!) Anyway, good luck with the nursing and I hope she makes a speedy recovery.

I know of one that did something similar - they think she ran into a branch stump on a tree. She had a big dent in the other side of her head but in a similar area. Once healed, I dont think it gave her any problems.

Good luck changing the packing!!

feel sick now,,,knew i shouldn't have looked!

not sure i could cope if a horse of mine did anything like that. Hope the recovery goes well.

That's awful!! But glad to hear the horse seems ok all things considering, wishing you best of luck for a full recovery x

Oops! Sorry Jade

.

TS; you may well be right about her issues. I have to say, she has been a good patient so far. Don't think I could ever trust her though, even if this does knock some sense into her.

Yes I've seen the results of well healed injuries like this - just not witnessed them pre-healing and perhaps I'm a bit ghoulish but I find these things quite interesting.

Thanks for all the good wishes vibes to her - I will let you know how she heals up in the next few weeks as I will be keeping my photographic diary as per usual when bizarre accidents occur.

Sorry to go OT Tia but how did the leg injury from the hay feeder heal as well? Was there much lasting scarring? That was another 'interesting' injury

Eek Tia that looks a tad nasty! How on earth do these horses manage to do these things? I once walked H up from the field and stopped to let her graze in hand, she spooked at something and caught her head on the fence and bingo ...gaping wound in her head!!

I couldn't believe it - the whole thing seemed to happen so quick and yet in slow motion! LOL!

Hi Law, the little yearling has healed amazingly well. I will post a before and after shot later today once I've taken an up to date photo.

H, I know, isn't it amazing what they can do! But also amazing how well these things heal up.
