One of the pups, don't know which as they go out to toilet themselves without us now, has diarreah. The last thing they ate was chicken wings this morning.

Question, therefore, is what does one give a sickie dog on the raw diet? Is rice OK? I'm going to miss out their lunch.

Another quickie: the big dog (he's 7 and has just started raw, too) did not finish his chicken wings and liver last night-he'll normally stuff his face until sick if allowed. I know some dogs don't like liver-should I persist? It's only been 2 days!

I am certainly not a raw expert by any stretch but do feed my dog raw, she won't eat any sort of offal completely raw ( tried heart, liver and kidney) and instead attempts to spread it round the house and bury it against the skirting boards which as a bit messy to say the least!
I don't know if it is the right thing to do but i very lightly braise the outside by popping it in a frying pan on full heat for about 20 - 30 seconds each side and let it cool. She then hoovers it down with no 2nd thought. I don't tend to mix the raw i feed other than adding a tin of pilchards or a bit of veg on some days, so she will have just chicken wings one day, tripe one day, probably chicken wings again the next day, then some sort of offal one day, whole fish the next and so on. Chicken wings or drumsticks or chicken 'trimmings' (backs and bits the butcher gives me) tend to make up the main part of her diet and then i feed the other bits when i can get them at a good price.
Since starting feeding raw ( touch wood ) we have had no diarreah so haven't had to cross that bridge but i tend to feed a probiotic natural yogurt ( no idea if that is allowed now she is on raw? ) and i find that tends to settle there tummies.

Chicken can sometimes give them the runs. Rice is fine, add a bit of cooked chicken if pup seems hungry. Liver...well I have 6 dogs and have been feeding raw for 8 years and not one of them will eat it so I'd give up. If he's picking at it now it's obvious he doesn't really like it so save yourself the expense. Plenty of other offal they can have which gives them what they need. Mine are big fans of heart, I buy the chopped heart..much less intimidating!!;)

To be honest I don't follow an exact schedule to raw feeding. Some days they get complete food mixed with some minced meat, next it will be a tin cos I've not defrosted something!! As long as they are getting good quality and a variety it doesn't really matter what they have, cooked or raw, processed or natural. It's all good to a dog!!

Re: liver and other offal, it is surprising how many dogs won't eat this on its own. I do like to ensure that it is fed as part of a balanced RAW diet so I get my butcher to bag me up a pet mince, which basically consists of a wide variety of meat, and offal is included in that.

Try chicken kidney's and or livers. Mine won't eat anything other than those.

Sometimes they get the runs at the start. Try feeding more bone or adding a tablespoon of pumpkin to their feed.

This was lamb's liver: puppies liked it, but I reckon I overdid it and that will explain the diarrhoea, I reckon. They've had rice and are happy. They weren't slowed down by the runs: still mad and energetic! Big dog had Orijen and no raw today and was happier.

I'll lay off the liver, then and stick to chicken wings.

Katielou: when you say pumpkin, do you mean raw (blended?) or cooked? Handily, they are available currently as it's nearly Halloween!

Thanks, all, you are brilliant.

Raw is fine although i usually buy the stuff in the can. Not the pie filling just the pumpkin.

If you buy a pumpkin. Cut it in quarters and roast in for an hour then scrape it out.

Freeze it in ice cube trays and then if you have a dog with the runs you can take out a couple of tubes.

we used to feed raw, dogs never looked so fab. id still starve for 24 hours the some rice and white fish:)

meant to say on one of your other threads, but i used to get huge boxes of 'odd shaped' chicken bits for £20 from a chicken processing factory... as in HUGE box, frozen, mainly wings, just mishapen

Sometimes dogs can get the runs when switching to the raw diet, just as their stomachs aren't used to the meat.
My lot started out with the squits, some rice and a bit of natural yoghurt for a couple of days sorted them out and their tums got used to the meat and they are fine now.

Thanks, all. I've never seen pumpkin in tins here.

Natural yoghurt-any type in particular?

N, am on the lookout for a chicken processing place (and a new freezer!)
