askham bryan college?

I did my Stage 1 there and I hated it, or rather I hated one of the instructors. She made everyone feel nervous by shouting at us all the time and being sarcastic. She seemed to make it her mission to make one person cry each time she taught us

I rode her horse (a rangy grey TB) and she was always on at me not to touch its mouth. I basically had to ride with reins so loose that I could have pegged the entire family's washing out on them. I learnt nothing from her and would never go back there again. If she wasn't there the place would be fine :)

I know nothing of the college but the above from Snowy seems to be what stage 1 want? I've known people fail for riding the horse in a contact in stage 1 or for riding the horse forward! Perhaps she was being harsh to be kind, to get you to pass she had to wreck your riding so to speak?

I did rather get the feeling that she was trying to turn some of us from reasonably competent riders into people who could barely control the horse  I know it sounds pathetic but she got me so nervous by shouting at me in one lesson that I had a bad dismount and ended up on my backside. Normally you'd expect the rest of the class to laugh if someone was that incompetent but there was absoute silence as no-one dared even crack a smile :(

Caitlin - it was about six years ago and I was only doing it for something to do in the evenings. I can't remember the woman's name but she was an older lady and I think she had two horses stabled at the college. Maybe she's retired now?

I only rode two horses. One was the old grey TB and the other was, I think (it's a while since I was there), a smallish dark bay TBX type. No-one else wanted to ride that one for some reason because they said that he bolted sometimes. He was a bit nervy in the stable but I found him a good, responsive ride and never had any problems with him apart from tacking up when he was very sensitive and you had to build the bridle round his ears as he was funny about them.

There were one or two 'donkeys' though. Fortunately, they were given to the heavier riders and I didn't have to ride them. They were real kick-along plods and I hate horses like that. If they had said that I had to ride them I wouldn't have bothered going again because I had enough of those sort of horses as a child at a riding school and all they teach you is how to boot them along

AFAIK the older instructor you mention has left (under a cloud according to my sources). The facilities are great now. I went there years ago for another course, before they even had the equine unit built!

Hi Caitlin, we appreciate your question about the College and would like to invite you, or any others interested in courses we are running, to come along and have a look at our facilities, meet with the tutors and get to know the College before you make a decision. If you would like to call on 01904 227722 or email enquiries@askham-bryan.ac.uk,. we would happy to meet you. Many thanks.
