I share a field with three others one is leaving so will only be three soon. Our rent is very cheap and we’re thinking of asking the field owner if she’ll let us make up the difference in rent so we can stay as a three. It would mean more grass the possibility of saving standing hay for winter maybe and best of all my boy can continue to be separated from the bigger ones when required. Are we mad?

No, not if it means it’s better for you all in the long run. If you can all afford it and the landowner agrees then I think it sounds like a good idea!

Well the opportunity arose to ask her yesterday she wasn’t keen 🤔. She’s a bit of a glass half empty person to say the least. I then suggested we just did it until spring. No one will want to come anyway over winter unless they’re desperate! No tap no shelter not allowed to make smaller paddocks except I am allowed to for now!

UPDATE
She has declined our offer to pay more and keep the field for three of us.
I’m so peed off. She does no maintenance. She’s unwell and the field is honestly a mess. Knackered fencing a welded trough no tap no grass currently no emergency stable or storage or shelter! It is super cheap not surprisingly. If it wasn’t so darn convenient and pony super happy I’d be off like a shot! We do all the weeding and I always poo pick where I can but can’t do seven acres on my own! Recently electric fences some of her paddocks to keep the peace when ours were busting out. It’s mad!

What's her reasoning??

The really good thing about this field is it’s an eight minute walk from my house. It’s cheap as chips and I suppose you get what you pay for. My pony is very happy there thriving on neglect. He likes just being a pony! The other two liveries horses are both retired so he gets zero stress from coming and going. Hope she can’t find anyone to join us but if she does I’ll pray for a quiet small retired pony!

Perhaps no one else will be interested. No tap sounds very hard!!

Honestly I despair with this woman!
I understand your frustration (and would probably be shrieking to the husband if it were myself in your riding boots) but I'm glad she gave it some thought and got back to you and was polite.

Don't lose hope yet. Who can cope with no tap???? I feel only the most stalwart person will want to be the forth agister.

Tell her that one of you wants to buy a second pony and they want to keep it there. They will pay for the new pony immediately so they have the space once they find something suitable.

Pop an add on Facebook. You're after a riding club allrounder who will pop round 1m20, hacks alone and in company and is safe enough for a child to ride. You have a budget of £1200.

Complain to field owner regularly about how hard it is to find the right horse and how you have been inundated with time wasters.
