hi
i went and got myself into a right debate on facebook this morning :o
i'm not a morning person and was feeling particularly grumpy , i need to learn to "sit on my hands" better :D

so there was a post on a local riding group basically asking for donations to go towards vet bills as the owner can't afford to pay for an operation on her horse
now it is a very sad tale and i really do feel sorry for the girl BUT if she cannot afford to pay for treatment herself should she be asking the public for donations ?

Perhaps I'm old and cynical but no I wouldn't contribute. First thought - can she afford insurance? If not then really shouldn't be owning a horse. OK I know it could be over the insurance limit but if it is can she then afford subsequent upkeep? These local fb pages can be real eye openers.

If the situation was that a vet would be willing to accept donations for the treatment from the public, I guess that's fine but I wouldn't give it to the owner. Maybe she could send it off to a charity since she cannot pay for it?

IMHO no and it makes me fairly cross when I see it too. Especially by those people who then post all over the place about things they've bought, recreational drugs they've used and holidays they've been on.

What happens if she can't afford to pay for the recuperation and/or complications.

Oh I saw that thread. Sounds genuine, but no I was not tempted to donate.

I feel for the horse, sounds like the treatment has been going on for 3 years :(

ETA for the person asking about insurance, I think (if it is indeed the same post) that the treatment has already gone over the £5k mark, yet needs further surgery for ~ £2.5k

This.

And actually, the vet will negotiate a payment plan - so there shouldn't be a problem paying the bill.

What fb page was this on OP??

As long as the request is genuine, I don't see any harm in asking. Its up to the giver to decide whether or not they want to help.

I'd be a bit annoyed if the person asking for help was irresponsible, but before donating, I'd do a bit of research first or possibly offer help in another practical way.
Not that I've got any spare cash lying around ..

that is exactly my thinking
she could use the money for anything and tbh it sounds like the poor horse has been through quite a lot (went over insurance cover i think) as it was stuck in barbed wire and apparently hasn't been sound for quite a while and this operation is going to cure it

am i allowed to post a link to it ?

i did ;) and she seems to have more spare cash than me available to spend

Spending 7.5k on vets bill has to be questioned, they are unlikely to go on to do a proper job, and shouldn't be bred from if incurring massive bills.

Therefore, and I know its heartless, wouldn't it be better to have the horse PTS and start afresh?

Sorry must seem harsh, but I couldn't justify blowing that kind of money on a mediocre horse (unless it had saved my life, or earned me lots of money or had another kind of exception!)

It's only 5 now so must have been a 2 year old when injured. Homebred out of the owner's pony.

I very rarely see anything I'd actually donate to. I think sometimes I can understand it, if they've (genuinely) rescued the animal for example, but in this case I'd PTS.

I'm afraid I would have had to put to sleep much earlier. I can afford vets bills but that amount would stretch most of us I'm sure.
She is prob got to the point where she is desperate, having already spent five thous and sees no other way. The guilt of having an animal pts is too much for some.
I feel for her, and obv her poor horse, but no I wouldn't donate.
