Asking prices and Offers?

Ok just a general question, but if a horse was up for £6000, how much (given the current market) would you offer for it? Or on the flip side whats the least you would take?

* I know this is a hard question because you don't know the horse in question but talking generally*

Do you think the current market affects asking prices - do you think more people are likely to budge due to the fact a lot of people are suffering at the moment?
 
I'm afraid it depends on the horse and it depends on the seller! Some people are more concerned that the horse is going to a good home whereas others may be in financial difficulty and can't accept less than a certain amount.

I would give it a go offering £5,250 and hope to meet them in the middle at £5,500. The worst they can say is no, and then you know you need to up your offer or look elsewhere!
 
Thanks for answeing everyone, I guess it all comes down to the particular horse and how keen the owner is to sell. It seems -£500 is a good place to aim for and starting a bit lower is ideal.

depends if the asking price is a fair price , of 5 horses i've owned i have paid asking for 4 , & they were all worth it , the 5th i got 10% off

i recently sold a horse fairly priced imo , was offered 20% less than asking by first viewer , flatly refused her didn't even negotiate , i accepted an offer of £500 less without any negotiation from the second viewer as i really liked her & wasn't going to quibble over £500 when it came to a good home , 3rd viewer also wanted 2nd viewing

so , imo if a horse is nice & priced right the market isn't slow , however there are lots of wishful sellers with the price tags
 
I paid £8k for a horse with an asking price of £12k. Mind you, I think my offer was very fair and they obviously did too or they wouldnt have accepted.

Do think there are a lot of highly priced horses out there at the moment and thats why they are sticking. A horse is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it.
 
pennyh you have hit the nail on the head, it really does depend on if the asking price is realistic. If horses are realistically priced then I would not expect to even get as much as 10% off but would always ask for something. Last one I bought I got 3% off and the last one I sold I gave about the same discount. Both horses were, imo, fairly priced to start with.
