After losing our old dog only a few weeks ago our younger dog has this condition he went in to the vets last thurs and has been allowed home today as they thought he would be better at home due to seperation anxiety.

He is very poorly coughing alot was not peeing alot at vets had catheter sp? on ocassions but did longest pee as soon as we took him outside and has been peeing fine all today, problem is antibiotics are tablet we have given these today but he will not look at food vet has said he has had strong dose of painkillers iv should be ok until weds but if hes not eating by then will have to have more painkillers iv again.

We are willing to give painkillers iv again but he hasnt eaten since tues before he went in so we are really worried how long can he go without eating will he just eat when he feels well enough.

He has had a couple of homes before us and i am sure being at the vets made him uneasy as i am sure he was stressing he wasnt peeing there but has been fine so far we arent pushing him he has other dogs in house we are feeeding them as normal he has onoly been home since this morning but must eat before weds or cant have painkillers and must go back for iv, should we liquidise food and give a little in a syringe to taste or just let him wait until he is ready to try on his own.

The condition he has does make his nose and mouth very dry so it would not encourage him to eat i am at my wits end, we are happy to do what ever it takes but would love to hear with anyone with experience of this illness and anything that helped their dog.

It is so distressing to see our lovely boy so unhappy so any suggestions we would be grateful for even some bizzare thing that wil tempt him to eat.

Thankyou to anyone who can help sorry if its long and i sound a bit mental i am at the moment oh and my horse has just made a big hole in its rear end tonight so any help to help my dog i will be grateful for.

Maybe try some canned sardines, my dogs loved those or some cooked chicken. Did he not eat anything at the vets? Is he drinking ok? I wouldn't try to force him to eat or syringe food but would call the vets in the morning to see what they suggest. Hope he is better after a night back at home.

Get back to the vet - NOW! It's the lack of fluids that'll be your main concern. Once they're off food this long, you need professional help.

Vets can give an AB injection that should last a week and that's prob what they've done. Get fluids down your dog with a syringe quickly. Don't worry about overdosing on fluids, they'll pee it out

Sorry in my muddled brain worry havnt explained dog went in to vets last thurs he has just been allowed home today monday has been very ill still is but has stabilised and they have tried everything to get him to eat wouldnt.

This condition if they can get over it is a long haul but at moment vets feeel he may be better of at home if he gets worse will go straight back bill is irelevant has been 500 already he is improving after a day at home is peeing okay now.

He is taking all drugs but the painkillers he has given us are liquid but the vet has said he must not take them unless he has eaten mon toady vet says if he hasnt eaten by weds he will have to have them by iv again which i am ok with but i also realise it is better for him to eat as he has not eaten since last thurs money or treatment is not an issue but vet is happy with progress and condition is long road back.

He is happier at home but what i am asking is has anyone experienced this condition or has anyone any knowing of is it better to let a dog just start to eat when it feels like it or should we try to liquidise and syringe.

The dog is lovely boy is what i would call introvert scared but is confident with most things we would do with him.

I f you look at this illness it is very serious and anything manual you do with the dog causes breathing problems and can take months to recover from at all so i am hoping anyone who has had experience of this will help or anyone who has had an ill very depressed dog can help with any suggestions massaging and calming is helping a little if he is in distress but we are happy for any food suggestions however weird oor anything if you have experienced this illnes many many thanks for anything that may help.

Sorry but am so stressed forgot to mention vets said he wouldnt pee had to catheter sp? he came straight out of vets with us and did longest pee ever our old dog was on kidney tablets that made him pee but he peed more than this so i think he had been holding it in.

We have horses and all sorts of other animals so not overeacting as have seen alot of treatment on lots of other animals, he has had a bad start and suffers from anxiety seperation.

He is a very greeedy dog so would usually eat anything so not eating is a big issue but not with this illness but we need him to eat to take painkillers we have tried all obvious so anything to help.

I would also love to hear from another dog owner who has had to deal with this and hopefully a dog that has survived from this.

My dog has had 3 bouts of asperation pneumonia. What condition does your dog have?
My dog also vould ot urinate, but all became apparent.
There are indeed plenty of things you can do to help this condition.
I will let you answer tomorrow when Im in a better state of mind:o:)

To tempt him to eat, try warm water over his normal dry food, or microwave it with a bit of water, really brings out the smell.
Or try wet food, or a bit of cooked chicken, or rice, anything you would normally feed a dog that he will eat! Hand feeding often helps, and feed him apart from the other dogs.

Good news he is eating today, still very poorly was interested by poster who said their dog has had it more than once, wasnt sure what you meany by what condition he has.

The way the vet explained it to us was that he had inhaled vomit in to his lung and that had caused it he said there would probably be some lung damage and that he needs to be rested only let out in to garden to go to toilet, he made it sound like it was just a freak thing that can happen and was a one off.

Would be interested to hear anything about your experiences and any tips for helping him to recover, also is it common to reoccur?
And thanks in advance for any tips or advice.

I have a dog with myasthenia gravis (a neuro muscular condition) very rare .which means he has a mega esophagus.
It is imperative dogs with this condition that are prone to asperate are fed from a height, and the food is rolled into balls (the food then goes down in 1) less chance of asperation (think meat balls) I actually fed my boy with his front feet on the bench, with me holding his body for support and OH feeding the rolled food balls, I then held him in position for a good 10 mins to help the food go down. Water must also be raised.
I used pedigee chum (Loaf) this is very easy to roll into balls or chappie meat (not the best quality) but with the condition this was the last thing on my mind (he now eats dry) but to do this this condition must be very stable.
He is now fed raised (chair height) but not held as his condition is stable (very well maintained by myself)
The moment I see a hint of cough, he is placed on the most and best of anti b's (Noroclav) he has steam placed in a crate and covered with towel to help with the fluid, and I tap his chest to help move the fluid.
The first bout was the wost and we nearly lost him, the next less severe as I now was more aware of how best to manage it, the 3rd very mild and we stopped in in it's tracks on day 1.
I would be very interested as to what blood tests you boy has had and what meds he is on (PM me) if you like or I will go as far as to give you my number to chat. I nearly lost my dog and it was my sheer persistence on my behalf (I did alot of reading and educating myself) re the condition, which I knew he had and my vet did not agree! I took him to another vet and he was paralysed by the time his meds arrived (he was on his last day) the meds where a life saver!!!!
He had the biggest pee in the world 6 hours after the first bout of meds after not being able to urinate for 3 days.
How is you dog when exercising?

I am not at home tonight my mum is looking after him but will look at name of his meds tomorrow he is taking two types of antibiotics aqnd a liquid painkiller,he is fine at excersise he was sick before he started to get ill so i am assuming this is why vet thinks it is inhaled vomit.

He does tend to try and bolt his food when eating and the people who owned him before us had swing doors and he used to bash them to open them with his nose and his nose does make a noise when breathing or sleeping so must have some damage i did ask the vet if this would have contributed to what happened and he said no he just had some soft palate tissue damage.

I will look at my vets bill tommorow as it is fully itemised as regards to bloods and x rays he had.

Until this episode he has never coughed or shown any signs of illness apart from his nose making the noise.

Ok i have vets bill here its says he had a small animal digital x ray. and a profile full haematology, he was given Intravenous fluids had a catheter.

I will also list some of the other things listed Vetinex 1 litre,Zinacef vial x5 20x1.25, Dimazon, Metacam inj, Vetergesic, Baytril inj Therios Palt tabs,Baytril inj,
some of thses he had several times during his stay.

He has been sent home with Meloxidyl liquid painkiller and is taking tablets one 150g and one 50g Baytril tabs they have Enrofloxacin written on them and a 750mg tablet Therios Palt. Daily.

He seems to be recovering really well now vets didnt give us any advice per feeding or anything so it was interesting to hear this needs to be monitered.
