Assisted DIY

£1 for each task :)

What, so £1 for bring in, £1 for rug change, £1 for hose legs, £1 for drying legs and £1 for feeding? That's £5 for what is a 10 minute MAX job, which is working for the equivalent of £30 per hour! Nice work if you can get it, but you wouldn't find me paying that! I'd pay £2 maximum for all of them together. If it's DIY then I would assume the feed would be made up ready anyhow.

I used to pay £44 a week for my pony to be fed AM, rugged AM, turned out AM, brought in PM, rugged PM and fed PM 7 days a week. All I had to do was muck out and prepare feeds.

I don't think you can generalise. Some padocks may be a considerable distance from the yard so it may take 15 minutes or more to go to, catch, & lead in the horse. Then you've got boots off, pick out feet, hose off feet/legs, dry off, rug change & feed. Depending on the time taken, then decide what the groom is earning per hour then work out a price. To be honest if you get this done for £1-£2 then the groom is working for nothing!

We pay £2.70 for a bring-in or turnout. This will include rug-changing, hosing, picking feet out & feeding. I imagine if a livery wants legs dried on the odd occasion then YO wouldn't charge more, but possibly would if it was on a regular basis. I think it's a fair price.

i would have thought picking out feet went hand in hand with good animal husbandry when bringing a horse in from the field so to bring in and pick out feet, £1, as you want legs washed and towel dried as well then another £1, why change rugs turnout rugs now days are just as adequate to serve as stable rugs, so the total cost could be £2, which then only makes it a 10mins job, changing rugs can push it up to 20mins. I personally wouldnt do all of it for £2, but i would if it was just to bring in and pick out feet. No charge for feeding assuming feed is made up.

There is a yard local to me that offer the following:

Mon-Fri, Feed AM (haynet if req), Turn out AM, Bring in PM (includes rug changes if req) - If for some reason horses can't go out they will give haynets, skip out and top up waters - £195 per month (stable/grazing & above assistance)

A yard i used to be on did
turn out £1.20 included rug changes
bring in £1.20 included rug changes, hosing legs and evening feed if requested

to be honest it is fair, because if you got a friend to do it, they most certainly would expect something in return to at least cover their petrol let alone their time, if you asked to leave work early they have every right to deduct a portion of an hours wage from you, so what is £2 extra a day and knowing your horse is safely in his box and fed.

yard near me charges £2.50 to turn out or bring in. think this includes rugging and booting if required. when i do someones horses near me it is basically £20 for the day- 2 horses- £5 to feed, change rugs and turnout both, £5 to bring in, i just pick out feet, change rugs and feed and £5 each to muck out. when £2.50 includes making up feeds, changing rugs and booting, that is quite reasonable. also field is a walk away.
to muck out, sweep yard, prepare feeds, hang rugs properly, all takes time £20 for nearly 2 hours, over 2 hours if i include the 10 minutes each way extra travel. work so £10 a hour is not a crazy rate

£3 for walk in at my yard, extra for rug pick feet etc. Considering my little ponies field is 10 metres from stable it's a bit steep! I guess they want to discourage extra services and encourage full livery instead.

Well I'm on assisted DIY.

I pay £50 a week for Stable, Field, bedding, hay, basic feeds, Turn out in the morning and bring in in the evening (if I'm not there at bringing in time), Change of rugs if I request it, poo picking done for me and use of the school.

If I go on holiday it is £3 a day for the muck out and popping haynets in.

thank you for your responses, seems like some places are really expensive and others are reaaonably cheap, I'm on the yard to do my horse anyway and it is a 5 min walk from my house, used to do it as a favour but wasn't getting anything in return and it became a regular thing so she started giving me 1.50 a day for bring in,rug change boots hose off and dry his feet which I got told was probably not a lot in comparison to what she could have been paying at other yards! maybe 2.50 as it does only take me 10 mins or even a weekly price as I do him
6 days a week? x

if you do it 6 days a week i would just ask for one payment- say £15- (£2.50 a day). i personally think that is reasonable, as also giving them the massive benefit of not needing to visit the yard twice a day. as harsh as it sounds, you need to make it worth your while, even if it is only 10-15 minutes work.

I used to pay £2.00 for a turnout, and the same for bringing in. This included rugs being changed if needed and legs washed if asked for. However not for drying the legs. Feed would be in the stable if needed.

I think around £8 an hour is reasonable - so if it genuinely is only a 10 min job then £1.50 is fine.

BUT maybe time yourself as even with pretty close fields, to get headcollar, go out, catch him (assume he's good to catch) lead back, tie up, hose off properly (would be 10 mins by itself for me) towel dry (never done it but must be 2 mins per leg to actually get them dry), pick out feet, change rug, put in stable go get feed, but in stable - you'd have to be superwoman to do all that in just 10 mins (or maybe I'm just slow!!)
