Asthma sufferers and horses ?s

Sorry i coudn't respond sooner 'computer said no' (grrr, hate when that happens)
I do have asthma. Like many of the other posts, i'v had it since i was 8/9. Unfortunately i had to give horses a miss for a few years (gutted :( )
The last year and a half though i'v started riding again and now i feel like i'm the healthiest i'v ever been; i keep fit, execise, eat healthily (most of the time,:p mmm pizza) and i take all the medication vaccinations i need. So i'm now at the point where i'm considering having a horse on loan and i suppose i was just looking for reasurance that i'm not the only one and it's not impossible to have horse and asthma.

Well I'm hoping the same! My "few years" were 35 years, and I believed it was for life. But now I've got a second chance, and like you, I'm hoping horses and asthma can mix!

I would say, try to have a list of family and friends who will help out if you have a bad day/few days. Train up family members if they're not really horsey! Try to minimize any activity which irritates you. I find a damp flannel's useful when grooming, I brush off the worst of the mud etc (wear a mask if you need to) then damp dust her!

Above all, ALWAYS take preventors. Remember they take a few days to build up and you need to keep them in your system.

I was severely allergic to horses, and there's no getting away with it then. it got so bad that just being next to someone who had recently been near a horse could put me in hospital, and no amount of medication could prevent it.

But miraculously, that's all changed now, :)

I hope it works out for both of us! xx

I developed asthma last year at the age of 50. We used the stables a field shelters the two bigger horses had the large stable and we shut the top door on the smaller stable for the two sheltands. There was no bedding but they do have rubber matting. I also got horse vaccum for grooming. OH did the hay for me but when I have to do it I take my preventer first use a mask and gloves and wash my hands and face as soon as I've finished.

We are lucky with our horses as only one would prefer to be stabled

My doctor has always done the same it says on prescription 2 x ventolin and I pay the price for one item!!

Me too Misha,
My request is always 2 of everything.

2 x Ventolin
2 x Boxes of Antihistamine Tablets
2 x Flixonase Nasal Spray
2 x Preventer (can't remember the name)

This way, although 8 items, I only pay for four. I asked for 3 x Ventolin, but they said no they're not allowed (it was worth a try)
However i've heard some health authorities may be changing this loophole and making you pay for all - hope not!!!

Really feel for all of you who have to pay for your medication, especially when you have to get 2 or 3 different things. I'm very luck because all prescription fees were abolished in Scotland last year. It's a worry off my mind not having to spend a chunk of my low wages on medicine.

Hmm, I've always been charged for every inhaler. Mind you, the annual charge is still cheaper, it works out at under £10 per month I think, for as many items as you like. I stock up for when the certificate runs out. I have an inhaler mountain in my bedroom!

I have asthma and hayfever. I seem to be affected by hayfever from late spring-autumn and I spend most of my time sneezing while I ride :p

I the winter I hardly have to do much before I start wheezing. I normally have my inhalers in my bag which stays in my locker or car and if my asthmas particularly bad that day I carry them in my jacket.

The cold makes my asthma worse :( which is why I am not looking forward to winter.

Don't feel too sorry for me.... I'm fortunate that I earn a decent salary.
I only need the antihistamine and nasal spray during the summer months, and can get by with the odd prescription for Ventolin. The Preventer even less so.

However i would love free prescriptions all round if i'm honest ;-)

And TinselTurkey - are you using a Preventer, if not get one.... :-)

Thought it might be worth mentioning..... my asthma has been very much better since I started taking an anti-histamine every day, all year round.
And I buy mine from Asda or other supermarket, the active ingredients looked the same to me as the usual Piriton etc, and an absolute fraction of the cost - a packet if 14 only costs about £1, MUCH cheaper than a prescription!

Good try with the 3 items on prescription !! haha

I also take antihistamines - used to get them on prescription years ago but I now buy tesco own etc for £1 - got some today 14 in pack for £1 ish ! had hellish hayfever today ! weird ! but I get it spring then autumn (think its trees not grass) also find red wine sets it off so I just take an antihistamine before I drink haha

ps booze also makes my asthma much worse - ok at the time of drinking but wheeze the next day ! maybe part of the hangover thing !

Yes, if I drink too much it can trigger my asthma, usually the next day. I used to think it was the secondary smoking in pubs that did all the damage, but now I can't blame that!

Change in weather conditions really upsets my asthma but if I religeously use my preventer I'm much better.

Mucking out and muddy horses also set it off so if dealing with either I wear a cotton face mask - just keeps the dust out of my lungs.
