Seeing as we have her first event in two weeks (everything crossed) we thought best jump some stuff that doesn't fall down when you hit it. Options were Swalcliffe or Aston Le Walls.I decided on ALW as on a surface. The last thing i needed was to ride like a pleb due to being worried about ground. Off we toddled and only went the wrong way once :biggrin3: Every time I go , I go a different way....

Got there and it was mobbed, at least 7 other horses there. Luckily by the time J had stopped being a llama on speed they'd all gone. 45 minutes to myself. Luckily with our 'pre season' steering not being 100% this was just as well.

What a fab facility. For those that haven't been, the new arena is attached to the original SJ arena by two ramps or ditches, logs and a trakehnar. There were a couple of little jumps but the rest were 90, 100 and novice with a couple of intermediates. The water had a log and barrel at either end, a house in the middle and at one end a ski jump that had the landing in the water.

There's some show jumps up and a few iddy biddy rustics for you to warm up over before hitting the big arena.

J's mum took loads of pics, she's a work in progress with a camera and could be heard swearing quite often at the camera :wink3: She did manage to get a few good ones, mostly with my head cut off (not complaining)

Had a fab session although I feel I could of ridden much more forward. It's only an hour away so plenty of opportunity to go back now the nights are getting lighter.

A few random pics. Bit of an overload but hopefully it will give an idea of whats there :smile3:

Taking an arrow head brush at the wrong angle....

Quite meaty steps.

And finally for full on comedy value.... NEVER under estimate how many horse eating trolls live in a barrel :eek3:

So ignore me and look at the back ground at the variety of jumps available.

Wow, looks like a fab facility. I've said for a while I think ALW will be the first venue with a completely all weather XC, this is the first step!

Looks amazing! Is it worth a visit for a horse going to do BE80s this year?

Yes I'd say so. In the SJ arena there was a roll top, palisade type thingy and a corner (all rustic) that were no bigger than 80. In the new arena there was tyres, a skinny-ish log that were 80. All the 90's were nice roll tops. The log by the water that you could jump in or out was probably about 85 ? They have coloured tags on most of the fences so you know what the height is. The bigger ones are mainly corners and brush type things.

For how busy it was I should imagine they'll get their money back within a couple of years. We went at 12 and were the only ones in there :smile3:

Nicnac - The barrels are about 6ft outside the water as is the log at the other end. Last week I should imagine they were actually in the water :smile3:

There were a few in the middle that you could do technical lines but as my steering wasn't to great I just worked on going forward. (my excuse and I'm sticking to it :wink3:)

random - i didnt think tandem and combination bits were BE legal?

Only asking out of interest I know you are only schooling here :)

Tandem ? Sorry don't understand ?

It's a nathe combination and perfectly BE legal. Well, we've not been stopped yet :smile3:

Just googled Tandem combinations :smile3: there's a few pro's that use the same bit. I'll double check but never been queried about it and use it for both SJ and xc. I've got a lesson with Nick on Sunday so I'll ask him.

yeah they are called tandems too. fair enough when I got mine in the summer (I use two different ones) I was told they arnt BE legal, it also says on some sites. I said thats fine as I showjump!

Ill double check as ive told people they cant use them as was always told you cant! Though they have stopped making the nathe ones at the moment

EDIT

I see they have made a new one :) They kept breaking so stopped them. I have a nathe and a beris and a long shank nathe on the yard. I really like them :)

We had a lovely time at ALW the other day too - haven't really done much XC schooling before and it definitely gave me the confidence to go out and event this season. I had the wrong front boots on, they came off in the water...and then I forgot to collect them on my way out...

Here are a few pics:

He was a bit keen - but was really pleased, we had a lesson with Nigel and went over several of the Novice fences including the shoulder brush which I definitely wouldn't have attempted on my own. Good sized steps, bank up to a log/ditch and other obstacless like tyres etc. Not too much for heights below 90cm, but definitely a great facility. I hope the plans for the HS2 don't ruin the site too much. Have fun!

Yeah worth a check! I did get told why but I dont remember! I know you cant use bitless or any form of bitless. Cant find the website that says it anymore! So I may be wrong

They are great though mine wouldnt go in any bit but tandems, though he got too strong in them and now he accepts a pelham .... just!!

There is very little that isn't legal XC for BE, hackamores, combi bits etc are all perfectly fine. The dressage phase is a different matter obviously.

Im trying to find it now but failing. Im sure I just read hackamores arnt allowed in any discipline BE

Im no eventing expert only wanted to say so you dont get pulled up but if its allowed thats good as they are useful bits! I did find it odd that they wouldnt be allowed when I was told!

Flippin Eck that would take me 3 weeks to put on :eek3:

I cleaned J's a couple of weeks ago and her owner had to put it back together ! Doh ! :smile3:

There are a few smaller jumps to practice on, but probably not worth the price for the number of jumps that are v small for a newcomer. The majority of the fences seemed to be 1m+ and lots of skinnies and corners. Although, there could be enough for a baby- little ditch, little log, house, water, pallisade. There aren't so many options with all the wet weather, so could be a good choice given your location.

well ive got 2 that need to go xc schooling, one more experienced so would be fine and one who is a youngster but is schooling over a decent height however has not met a trakhener yet so wanted a nice one for his first experience. however as you say in this weather beggars cant be choosers!!!!
