At my wits end with sunburn!

I have a mare with totally pink nose, suncream & sudocrem don't do the job. She wears a flymask with an attached nose net, never burns, no fuss, no mess. Be aware to put it on according to light levels, even when few flies about.

I sympathize. I have found cahsel crusader masks excellent, especially if you have fly issues too. For my cob lad who has a complete pink muzzle I discovered Boots soltan 'play'. Its an 8 hr sun cream. It has no smell and doesn't sting. Even my super sensitive old lady will tolerate having it put on. She objects to most things. The other bonus is that it rubs in so you don't get filthy noses and its not too expensive.

Sudocreme isnt a sunblock, it has no SPF. It is also oil based so will heat the skin and make it more likely to burn. Can't believe people use it!

This EXACTLY!! Sudocream is neither a suncream nor sunblock and saddlesore is corerct in saying its oil-based so will burn the skin under the sun's rays.

I found factor 50 sunblock and a facemask with nose cover does the best job on my horse's pink nose - he's never been burnt

my mare has had a burnt nose for the last few years - this year she is in a different field which has no buttercup and it has not burnt once !! normally I need to put suncream on daily (proper horse stuff is best as is very thick and stays on) or put field safe headcollar on with nose protection. This year her nose isn't even pink !!

Filtabac is brilliant. Soothes and protects, best thing I've found. I put a really thick coat on. Equilibrium do a nose shield too but i still think you need something under it.

This. My boy gets plastered in it every morning and has no sun burn at all. It's very thick and gloopy so it stays put and is often still on at the end of the day. It's also great on cuts and grazes. I even used it on a small burn I had and it really soothed it. Mine wouldn't keep a nose net or fly mask on so I had to find a suitable cream.

Mine wears either a PE full face mask or a Shires mask with nose. She also gets sunburnt above her eyes as she has an enormous blaze. I don't bother with potions as she dips her muzzle in the water and trumpets until it's all off.

My lad has a very pink nose and pink around eyes so it's a Rambo Vamoose fly mask with nose shield , daily eye wiping and factor 30 nivea kids sun cream. He has been fine this year.

Hopefully there has been a misunderstanding and the sudocreme folks were only referring to it as an after sun soother in which case its great. I'm sure no one thinks its a sunscreen.

Sudocream has mainly the same ingredients as sun-cream, except it contains less alcohol and has zinc oxide (its main ingredient) and wax (hence it does not come off as easily as sun-creams do). The only vaguely oil like content is in lanolin-also listed as an ingredient in sun-cream.
From Wikipedia;
'Zinc oxide can be used in ointments, creams, and lotions to protect against sunburn and other damage to the skin caused by ultraviolet light (see sunscreen). It is the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB reflector that is approved for use as a sunscreen by the FDA,[60] and is completely photostable.[61] When used as an ingredient in sunscreen, zinc oxide blocks both UVA (320–400 nm) and UVB (280–320 nm) rays of ultraviolet light. Zinc oxide and the other most common physical sunscreen, titanium dioxide, are considered to be nonirritating, nonallergenic, and non-comedogenic.[62] Zinc from zinc oxide is, however, slightly absorbed into the skin [6'

Sounds like sunblock to me?

Sudocreme really didn't work on Pie, seemed to make his nose worse not better and he hated me applying it. Since changing to gold label sun guard we haven't had a problem - I cannot recommend this stuff highly enough! I've shared it around the yard and sorted out a few crispy noses over the years.

Filtabac is also a zinc oxide cream similar to sudocream. It differs by also containing titanium oxide which is why it apparently offers superior sun protection to sudocream. I have definitely found filtabac to be far more effective sunblock than sudocream. Both titanium oxide and zinc oxide are contained in many human sunblocks.

Another vote for germolene, my baby cob suffers from sunburn, put him in a headcollar with hanckercief attached, knotted of course, he tolerates germolene being applied and his nose is noticeably less pink, he won't wear a fly mask, so how can you help those that won't help themselves

Ahhhh thank you for all the replies! I got distracted, I'm afraid. Hah.

Sunburn finally solved by use of pure Aloe Vera gel (amazing stuff!) and a UV nose guard. The pink is now pink again :) Thanks all for the advice!
