At what age did you start paying for your own horse.

ahem................last year aged 25

I got my first pony when I was 12 so my parents paid for him until I left school and got a job.
However I didn't pay my parents anything to live at home as they thought that paying for my horse was enough for someone only earning £45 a week!!

I got my first pony when I was 7 though didnt start paying much until I left school. Parents always paid for livery and insurance but in my gap, I practically paid for everything else like feed, shoeing, lessons, competitions etc. It wasnt set in stone what I had to pay, I just did what I could. When I leave uni and hopefully get another horse, it wont be untill I can afford it on my own. I dont want to be reliant on my parents for my hobby.

I didnt have my first horse until i was 20 so paid for everything myself from day one. Had them on share & part loan before that which i paid for but could't afford one completely by myself until then. I had weekly lessons as a child which mom & dad paid for ( roughly £15 per week) and was desperate for a pony of my own but knew we could never afford it. I think i was lucky having my lessons paid for me, a couple of my friends would have loved to have rode on a regular basis but their parents just couldn't afford it.
I've got two now which i pay for myself, but mom still doesn't ask me for any rent or anything (i still live at home, am almost 23 now) so still think i'm really lucky. There's no way i could afford both of my girls if i paid rent/bills at home.

I got my horse when I was 15. I was not asked to get a job, but I really felt that I wanted to contribute as my parents didn't have a lot of money, and my two brothers did not get anything nearly as expensive as a pony (they got a brand new playstation the day after my horse arrived). I was at school, had a waitressing job in the evenings and then took on a job at a fishmongers when I started my A levels. My parents paid for vet and insurance, I paid for everything else as soon as I could.

I have gone backwards though recently and now my hubby pays for most things, it sounds nice but I really do not like having to sponge off him for what is essentially an non essential aspect of my life! Roll on November and a pay check (!)

I got my first pony when I was 12 (had a few on loan before that, all funded by mum and dad). I paid show entries and any winnings we got (not many!) went to my mum as a contribution. Got a job at 16 and started to pay 'housekeeping' to mum and dad, which was £200 a month. This actually went on the horse (didn't cover all extras but a good chunk toward the upkeep!). Since returning from uni at 21 I've paid for everything myself - although was very lucky that mum paid the initial cost of the current horse (minus the £1000 I made on the previous horse) - although I am paying her back each year when I get my bonus. Mum had full use of the pony while I was away so didn't mind at all paying for him!

I pay all bills, insurance etc. now, although mum does help out with shoes and feed now and again (which is fair since she rides the horse too!!).

i got my first when i was 11, mum and dad covered the bills up until i was 20, when we decided I didn't have the time (1 full time job mon-fri, one part time job fri/sat nights/early mornings and part time college weds & sun!) and we gave them away to a friend.

I did get a horse last year on perm loan (i'm 24 now) and my mum offered to pay for his first set of shoes, but I never hinted or asked her to help me. I wouldn't ever now I'm an 'adult'

I'm 16, and still in full time school, and will be for a while yet, so luckily my parents foot the bills. However I buy tack/rugs and payed for 1/3 of the initial buying cost of Bean. That blew all my savings, so although I will be contributing what I can to the new horse, it won't be as much as last time. As soon as I have a job that pays enough for horses, I will pay. I feel awful living off the bank of mum and dad already

I'm 18 and I got Scooby on loan a few months ago, he is my first horse. I pay everything for him from my wages working at the riding school... even if that means that I then don't have any money for anything else!

(This month I have been paid a grand total of three pounds... the rest all went to Scooby! Very kind boss/YO topped it up to a tenner because she felt bad that I was getting so little.) I think that if a large, unexpected cost came up, like a massive vet bill, my parents wouldn't mind helping out... but I wouldn't expect them to.

Despite paying for Scooby by myself, in most other respects I am quite spoilt. My parents pay the tax and insurance on my moped (granted, this is a VERY small amount compared to a car) and when I took driving lessons they paid half the cost of those. They also occasionally give me "pocket money" for going out and stuff if I've spent all my money on Scooby and petrol and have none left. I may be spoilt, but I promise I'm not a brat!

21- when I moved out 7 months ago. until then, it was my lovely Gran paying my Livery for 1 horse, and my OH the other- Red is technically his (well, he bought him for me). My Gran bought me my first pony when I was 10 and then when we sold him, when I was 13, she kept all the money we made on him and I got my next horse with savings.

im 18 and had horses since i was 12. she used to pay for everything. for the last few years my mum has paid for rent and insurance and i paid for everything else, now i pay for rent aswell and my mum just pays for insurance. i work 16 1/2 hours a week and just about manage. luckily i dont have to pay house rent yet as my mum understands how much prince costs me to keep. he consumes the same amount of food as a rhino and is still a hat rack!

Hm. Maybe Daughter1 should read this thread in full...

She is fifteen, earns £15 per week babysitting, and I give her £10 per week pocket money and because she looks after my horse when my work takes me away. I pay for her two ponies - everything. She tried to give me all her money towards the horses, but I didn't see the point - if she doesn't have any money to go out, it will be me paying. The net same net effect lol. She does now give me £15 a month towards straw as she wanted both ponies on full beds instead of the mats with a spinkle, so I said that's fine, you pay for it, and she pays £5 per month for a bolt on for her phone (we pay £15 per month for the 'phone's contract).

Hm.

Will maybe have to have a think about it all lol
