Our 10 month old Jack Russell bitch seems to have really quietened down over the last month or so and I cant work out if its just her settling down and getting older or there is something wrong.

More often that not she just lies in her basket or on the sofa with me. She seems to be eating and drinking ok but she has never been a big eater anyway. If we are out walking she had lots of energy and whizzes around and she pootles around the yard with me (although she isnt keen on being out when it is cold and wet) and loves learning tricks and do general training and she happily run after a football for a good twenty minutes but when at home its like not having a dog.

She is quite a nervous dog so likes to stay away from noise and commotion anyway. She has seen the vet a couple of weeks ago as she had a poorly tum and she said she was in good health other than the squits but I am worried something is going on and thats why she is so quiet now. No obvious signs of discomfort or bad temper. She does get a fair amount of exercise in that she is not stuck at home but is often in the car with me or with the horses. We probably go for between 30 - 60 mins walk once a day plus other activity.

The only other dog I really klnow in its home environment is my mums dog who is always in your face, fidgeting, looking to play (he is a 7 yr old bichon frise cross).

Do you think this sounds normal and I am just being overly concerned? (and grateful that she is so laid back!)

Has she had her first season yet? the reason I ask is because our 9month Lancashire Heeler has just come into season and she is a lot more placid. I dont expect it to last though its just that she seems more loving and Ive put this down to her being under the weather with her heat. She still keeps the Dobes in shape though.

Depends on breed and temperament, I suppose. Mine are very lively, but we spent a long time training them that the lounge is a no mad play area, so we get peace and quiet in the evening. ;)

Our 3 1/2 year old lab has just started slowing down in the evenings
.
Could you take her for a full check up to put your mind at rest? The season thing is a good suggestion, maybe she feels a bit under the weather if hormones are kicking in. If shes nervous she might just feel safer tucked away in a place she knows.

I agree with the first poster. If she hasn't already had a season it may be due to it coming on. If your vet saw her a couple of weeks ago and said she was fine and she's eating and drinking ok then i wouldn't be overly concerned. All breeds mature at different rates but as a rule of thumb the bigger the dog the longer it takes (small ones around a year and large breeds 2 or even 3 years!) but that doesn't mean they'll be calm just because their mature. Bichons are notoriously playful all the time! LOL.

If she's happy in herself and you're giving her lots of exercise, and more importantly, stimulation, she's probably just contented at night and happy to chill.

Give it a another couple of weeks and see if her season comes in and if you're still not happy go to the vet again for peace of mind :)

Sounds exactly like my little JRT bitch, got quiet before her first season & was a different dog afterwards! She was a horror of a puppy, wouldn't be house trained, no recall, almost as soon as she had her season she became an absolute dream, calm, trainable, never really need a lead with her now her recall is excellent :)
