Bathing your horses every day with soap become a welfare issue?

One group of people are bathing their cob everyday, I mean a full bath, copious amounts of soap.

It’s got plenty of feather and hair, I bath for shows other than that if I ride and the horse is sweaty it’s just plain water hoses on and a sweat scraper as I was told continuous bathing was bad for horses coats and hair and could result in skin conditions.

I personally don’t like these people, some of the worst types you could find on a yard no sense in them, backstabbing and will twist anything to make gossip. However I am concerned for the pony. Currently ignoring them as I always do and going with the mantra of not my horse not my problem but just wondered at what point this will become an issue. They are the type to get the vet out and lie that they don’t know what’s caused it .

mmmm. well I'm not sure. I mean racehorses often get bathed maybe not everyday. Plus I had a friend who did it a LOT and never had a problem

But like everyone else here says, its not your business. If there using the facilities when you need to ask politely when they are finishing.

One thing I do know. I wouldn't want to the on this yard. It sounds awful!

Don't they need grease in their coat to absorb vitamin D? I can't Google right now but I'm sure it's a combination of daylight and natural oils that are needed.

But some people are better left to get on with it..... unless yard is on a meter in which case YO might say something

Apart from the over use of water I am not sure it is a welfare issue until its hair falls out and they don't call a vet. It is one of these things that is alright until it isn't. Think you need to sort yours when they have finished or better still before they start

The whole yard isn’t like them but yeah I don’t associate much with them, you get folk like them everywhere you go never been in a yard that doesn’t to be fair.

Erm, when I had a grey, she was washed daily...

(not the entire body, but some days it seemed like 60% of it!!!).

Can't stand to see poo stains.

Never did her (or him, the previous grey) and harm, as far as I am aware.

White tails :D

No poo stains

Fewer flies ;)

why I would never own a grey or mostly white coloured ?

Where did I say it bothered me? Kinda get sick of having to wait constantly to wash anything or fill a bucket to make feeds or fill a water bucket, or walk to the other end of the yard to do it from the other hose? it was a broad general question brought on by watching people constantly washing a pony.

While it's frustrating that some owners lack basic knowledge (such as, the natural oils in the coat help keep a horse warm and waterproof, and also contribute to shine!) I can't see that washing with an appropriate horse shampoo will actually cause welfare issues. If the horse is rugged/boxed, it will probably be fine.

I think it was where you started the thread by asking when it became a welfare issue?

It tends to suggest it does bother you from a horse perspective, especially as you went on to say that you are concerned for the pony.

You asked a question, people are just answering.

If it is just that you are bored waiting for the hose, I would get there earlier and bag the hose (as in lay claim to it, not wrap it in a Sainsbury's carrier (other shop brands are available)).

I think it is more about you saying that you don't like the people.
