Age Would you put a youngster over a pole/crosspole/fence ?

Loose schooling that is ....

Yearling ?

2 yr old ?

3 yr old ?

most of our yearlings have seen poles and had a little play over them, nothing big or stressful but a nice quiet early way

I second that at 3 year old, i dont think their bones are developed enough before that age.

Poles on the floor etc as early as possibly - when I first had Tilly her field resembled a handy pony class!!!

As for actually putting them over a small fence, 3. Tilly has just started proper work and included in that is a little pole work (on the floor). She has also popped a few 1ft fences on the lunge (not alllowed to loose school in the local school) but tbh she just elevateds her trot over them and I really don't plan for her to "jump" until 4. Until this autum however she would frequently jump the 5ft fencing out of her paddock and its only now that we have 2 strips of fencing 3m apart that she stays put!

thanks .... well had a little play with missy, she was in the arena with lily loose, So had a cross pole up for lily , anyways missy followed her over it lol ... put poles more or less all around the school and she wasnt fussed by it , she did however charge at it but towards the end settled down and just walked over them .

She hasnt seen poles like that so it was different for her .
