Ataxia help ASAP pls

So my back lady has been out today and very quickly realised the problem has come from trauma, most likely getting cast in his stable. She’s had to be conservative with treatment until we xray (hopefully tomorrow) but he already is much happier in his body. She believes the base of the neck is the problem which is why we only saw the ataxia in his hinds. He’s far from fixed but if the X-rays are clear she believes he will return to work.

We lunged him before and after and she said if you didn’t know him well you wouldn’t see a problem on the lunge. He has been dynamically sound throughout.

So I’ll reply to messages shortly but I just need to go and have a mini melt down .. I don’t even know why 🤣.

I bet some of it is relief kicking in that he is showing as so sound, as well as the worry about x-rays. I really feel for you, I'd be an utter mess if it was my boy.

Can he be x rayed at home rather than having to travel him in? Not sure if a portable x Ray machine will be powerful or manoeuvrable enough to do the neck, but it would save having to transport him.
You can xray the neck at home. I had one done a few months ago for PPE. My own vet won't do it other than at the practise for H&S reasons as she says you get a bigger radiation dose and more exposure to the thyroid. Another vets I approached would do the images on site but sent them back to the practise for an expert to evaluate.

I'm glad you have an answer. Mine fell over twice when he had laminitis-once in the stable and once in the arena when we popped him out with another horse. But we think it was purely down to the pain. It was dreadful to see. He's never ever done it since thankfully.

Hiya folks just wanted to thank you all for your support when my bestest was sick! He’s all clear and everyone is in agreement that it was trauma causing the ataxia. His neck does show some age related minor changes but nothing that would cause the problems he has had.

We will gently start to bring him back into work now. He has a very important job to get back to and that’s escorting our youngsters out hacking. We have been lost without him, he really is the at the centre of everything we do. This thread really helped me thank you all x

Another cautiously good update 🙂.

Embarrassingly TP his neck is too fat 🤣. We had the back lady out to treat him and make sure he was fit to travel etc before we took him.

Yes I knew it would be most probably after the buck and fart, my money is on him slipping in the field as I said way back in reply 9.

Anyway glad you got him xrayed and he's okay, great news, onwards and upwards.
