Just wondering what the best way to attach a leadrope to a bridle is - the horse uses this bit (can't for the life of me remember the name of it!).

I seem to remember a previous riding school looping the rope through the bit but I've also seen people clipping to the noseband but not sure what is best or safest for the horse.

It's best to use a coupling. If it's just for a one off then through the left hand ring, under the chin and clip onto the right hand ring (or vice versa for ride and lead)

It depends what you are using it for, I would clip to the offside ring and pass through the nearside in most circumstances but may use the noseband if leading a rider and wanting them to have full control but needing to be there in an emergency.

The safest way is a leadrein coupling which can be bought cheaply. Failing that you can clip it on the bit threading the rope through the largest ring on the side you are leading and then clipping on the largest ring furthest away from you. This doesn’t work as well as you have to be careful not to let the rope become tight and pinch the bit together. You can also clip on the noseband but this would only work if the horse was a plod and unlikely to pull as your noseband would snap if it did.

Probably the best way is to use a lead rope designed for attaching to a bridle - it was a while ago but when I volunteered at a riding school they had lead ropes with two clips so there was even pressure on each side of the bit. Otherwise yes I would loop it through - I’m sure you know already but just make sure whatever way you use it attaches on the snaffle ring!

I use a coupling, does the job perfectly! No pinching or pulling the bit through the mouth if horse decides to be a spanner.

I would not attach to nose band

I would either clip on the opposite side and thread rope through bit ring

Lastly if hacking out I would put head collar under the bridle

IMO:

Don't clip to the noseband, unless its a chunky plain cavesson with rings.

If its just a one-off (you need to lead a horse that is already wearing a bridle) then through the bit ring and clip on the other side.

If its regular and needs to be off the bit (e.g. you are leading in the bridle for control reasons), use a coupling or leadrope with two ends.

If its regular and shouldn't be off the bit (e.g. leading a pony that is also being ridden) then remove the noseband, headcollar under the bridle, clip to the headcollar.
