Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has lost a youngster to atypical myopathy?

Lost my yearling last week, it was very quick and he was pts within 12 hours of going down, I now understand through research that this is typically the case although not much is known about where/why it occurs.

Awaiting post mortem results

atypical myoglobinuria - little known, but by those who do it's much feared. friend lost a lovely youngster to it last yr. thought to be more common after heavy rain in those living out without much supplentary feed/hay.

so sorry about your yearling.

A friend lost their horse to this a few years back. Quite a distressing illness. Really not a lot known about the disease but I when I last looked into it the most common theory was some sort of toxin due to rapid bacterial/funal growth seen during changes in weather and affecting primarily horses out at grass with no or little hay/hard feed.
Sorry to hear about your horse.

It's poorly understood on the whole, although it has been suggested that it might have a toxic component. Worryingly it seems to be increasing in incidence. There are some interesting reviews on the internet discussing risk factors etc.

Might be worth asking your vet to run bloods for selenium as this may or may not play a role and is something that can be supplemented if there is a problem.

Hi everyone,

I too have lost my youngster due to Atypical myopathy last week. I have a BSc in Equine Science and am using it to help collect research and have the help and backing of many veterinary surgeons also.

You can help as i am collecting information on all horses that have suffered from this tragic condition in order to correlate as much information so that we can develop a better understanding of the situation and try to begin to understand/find out what is causing it.

Could anyone with information please email me ruth.cassettari@virgin.net if you are happy to forward information it will be put to good use, blood test results would also be fantastic to get the best insight possible. Horse and hound are running an article on this condition this week. Keep smiling people - I know how devastating it is

Hi I lost my 4 year old last Saturday, I know what you are going through and am so sorry.

He lived out but did receive hay and Equivite supplement as grass not that great.

No streams, location Jersey. It was raining.

Please let there be a vaccine soon.

There may be a possible link to disturbance of grass/soil and toxins in the soil and also by using mechanically poo picking paddocks and machines that use a sweeping brush action in order to collect droppings. The suggestion is not to use this type of poo picking device and this is also suggested by the grass sickness organisation too.

I lost my pony mare in April this year aged 7. Pony was out on loan as a companion for a hunter over the summer. She had only been there a few weeks. Symptoms were stiffness in her hinds and depressed. Initially loaner thought her gelding had tried to mount the pony as she was also in season Vet took bloods and gave ab's after first visit. Pony was found dead in the paddock next day. Loaner made some enquiries locally and paddock had had grass sickness some 25 years earlier but more recently was arable. Weather in April improved followed by a sudden severe cold snap. We were/are devasted and i feel very guilty for letting her go there in the first place.Of course loaner was not to blame in any way and she too was devasted Before pony went she had been in at night and out during the day but there she was out rugged 24/7. Post mortem confirmed Atypical myopathy.Vet has requested land is not used for grazing again.
