Cardboard is good for dust, but unless it’s the ‘chopped eggbox’ stuff, there can be a bit of run off before it starts absorbing the wet.I've always used pellets but one of mine started coughing so I put megaspread or other large flake shavings on top. The shavings contain the dust and the pellets do all the absorbing.
Cardboard is the only truly dust free bedding I've ever used but I found it difficult to manage.
My preference is always quality straw bedding(!), but have sometimes had to find beds for allergic or COPD horses, spent an absolute fortune on all types of top premium brands, and been thoroughly disillusioned with so called dust-free products.
The very best I’ve ever found was bales of shredded newspaper - surplus, unsold, unused, broadsheet publications - diced and baled specifically for animal bedding. On top of rubber mats - warm, absorbent, dustless - brilliant!
Our supplier retired and we no longer have the allergic horse, so unsure how available it is now, but was a lot cheaper and more effective than Aubiose, for example.
