Short story is poor pony has to have surgery on both hocks, he will be on box rest for 6 weeks. Now normally he is on straw but he is such a pig on starw I have decided if I have to muck out twice a day at least I can make it a bit easier.
Pros for aubiose I think-easier, use less in the long run
cons-higher initial layout.
Pros for shavings
they look alot more soft for them to lie on (such a girly thing to say

)
bit cheaper
cons
less absorbent so use more?
Anyone had any experience with both?
Thanks

we have aubiose, and one horse who is often on box rest (!) and I can recommend them. Easy to look after, work well for deep bed, once you get a proper base to them they never go through to the concrete...

Aubiose every time.. you use alot les.. they make a deep bed.. the horse find the comfortable.. from what i can tell.. they have little odour and they are jsut ACE lol

I currently use Aubiouse and have been on it for about 2-3 years. i swapped to aubiouse from shavings, and I would never, ever go back to shavings!

I am currently looking into Megazorb, which is similar to Aubiouse in that it is very absorbent. Also needs a deep bed to soak up properly. Megazorb is about £2 cheaper to aubiouse too.

One of my horses is very wet and I couldn't afford to keep him on shavings, as he soaked his bed. Auboiuse is much better for him.

When you lay the bed, if you pat it down with the back of your fork, the bed compacts, and as the bed gets damper it really makes a soft but solid bed. You don't have to look for droppings as they just stay on top. really easy to muck out twice a day then. (all i do is take out droppings each day and then take out wet once a week). You do need quite a deep bed to start with though, but it is well worth it, i think.

Aubiose is MUCH better than shavings, more expensive per bale but you use less once the bed is in. It is much much more supportive, esp with bigger pones as they dont just kick it all away as they get up. It also (and this isnt often mentioned but is really big thing for me) doesnt stick to their coat and rugs nearly as much and is way way easier to put in a new bale, just open and pour.

Before I used it i thought it was for those with more money than sense but the minute I put it down in the stable I was converted. And it rots down quicker!

I have just changed my horse from straw to Aubiose.

B is really really dirty on straw and mushed all the poo in. On Aubiose he is absolutly spotless even though his new stable is quite a bit smaller. Really easy to muck out, very absorbant and the top layer seems to stay really clean. I dont think I will ever change back to straw.

I have not tried shavings as we are not allowed them on the new yard I have moved to, but I have never been a great fan of them.

Oh and the aubiose, in my opinion is much softer than shavings.

I have one horse on shavings and had one on Aubiose (don't ask why), although reluctant to try the Aubiose I must admit I probably prefer it now - it is more absorbant, the bed is 'denser', it doesn't stick to rugs etc as much. I have recently used Hemcore, which is made from the same product, it is not as light in colour as Aubiose, the bales are slightly larger butand it seems pretty much identical to use to me - and is a couple of £ a bale cheaper in our area.
