Audi Q3 and towing

I’m looking at buying a 2022 Audi Q3 35 TFSI 1.5 litre petrol automatic. 150 bhp. Torque figures below — not sure which is the one to look at! Petrol because I don’t make regular long / motorway journeys. Walk to the school run, yard is 7 mins from home and personally just don’t love the idea of diesel.

If I ever get around to it, it would only occasionally tow a single trailer which I don’t even have yet — an Ifor 403 most likely. Trailer weight is ~767kg according to google. I would have some towing lessons and lots of practice before I ever consider towing a live animal!

My horse is a 15.2hh Welsh Cob x American Saddlebred (thought he was a Standardbred but I recently tracked down the breeder. Strange combo!), he’s a finer type. Weigh tape says he’s 420kg, we’re awaiting a yard weighbridge visit. The towing capacity of the car is actually 2000kg if I’m looking correctly.

I basically want a nice zippy car for everyday use that can sometimes tow if I wanted to. I really like Audis and have wanted one for ages, for my sins. It doesn’t have a tow bar fitted but I believe they are factory fitted with the hitch?

I have a feeling people are going to say for towing, it should be a 2.0 litre engine at the minimum, but I’m asking anyway! Appreciate all thoughts, insights, prayers etc. 😅

Specs here

Engine Power - RPM5000Engine Torque - LBS.FT184

The Q3 is the same as the VW Tiguan. But I doubt if the 1.5 petrol of either can tow 2T if the 2.0 diesel version tows 2T

I thought the same, but as far as I can see it says max towing weight braked is 2000kg. I’d be nowhere near that weight and wouldn’t want to test it at that weight!

I thought the Q3 was more like the T-Roc, than Tiguan. Annoyingly we used to have a diesel Tiguan but it cost loads to run.

I think the beefier Q5 is more suited as a towing car. But I don’t think I want something that size for daily life when it might only be towing sometimes…

Q3 might have slightly different dimensions but it is built on the same platform as the Tiguan.
Q5 is the equivalent of the Tiguan Allspace.
You can check the plate on the driver door to get the exact towing capacity

Thanks ever so much. I’ve seen plenty of people do tow a smaller trailer/horse with a Tiguan diesel 2 litre. So I may research the Q3 diesel 2.0 some more. I’m hoping for something used but 2020 onwards either way.

No it’s not big enough to tow with.
I bought a Q3 2.0 TDI with the intention of towing, brakes weight tow capacity was 1800kg which for me wasn’t sufficient to feel comfortable to tow with.
I would imagine the petrol version with a slightly smaller engine is even less capable.

ETA - I sold it and bought a VW Touareg, I tow with that although I know that’s a huge difference in cost to run etc.

Thank you. I really appreciate the insight and I’m glad I asked ☺️
