Has anyone any experience of Australian Stock Saddles? A friend has been advised to try one on her spooky mare who has a habit of spinning and bolting for home out hacking. Apparently they are supposed to make you feel more secure in the saddle and less likely to fall off! Any feedback good or bad gratefully received.
Thanks

I have an Aussie Stock Saddle (one of the ones Jason Webb in Kent sells from Aus) and I wouldn't ride in anything else now.

You have to be sure you get a good one though.

iv ridden quit a lot in them - being aussie :)

yes i love the, they are very secure and hard to fall out of. used a lot for 'trail riding' in oz.

cons are they are very heavy and big compared to english saddles.

Hi. Do you have contact details for Jason Webb? We are based in Kent and the stockist my friend has a catalogue from is in Cumbria so Kent would be far more convenient.

Only have experience of my western saddle and 100% love it! so secure and you have the horn to grab in an emergency!

Blinking heavy though I am seriously thinking of asking the horse to learn how to give at the knees when I need to put it on....do not think they are really intended for a 17hh monster!

A friend has one, she got it for a young spooky horse, and its true you do feel very safe and secure in it, trouble is.. you cant get out quickly!

She had a moment where she had to get out the saddle and it caused her some bother!

However... on her other horse its amazing, very comfortable and holds you in well.

I dont like it very much as i like to have a bit more freedom of movement!, Although i do like riding in the western one, as you have a bit more freedom!

One point i would say is... when your dismounting leave your foot in the left stirrup until your right legs on the ground. If you take both feet out and try to swing your leg high enough to get out you could scare the young horse and get stuck!! But the problem with doing is, is the making sure it will stand still with you having one foot still in - if it bolts your also i a bit of bother!

hi,i have an english,a western and an australian stock saddle.i bought the stock saddle to use on my youngster to feel more secure.however they can be difficult to get out of and the first time i used it i accidently touched him trying to get off and he freaked.i have not used it on him again.however i use it all the time on my mare it is very comfortable and the stirrups and leathers are far better than the western.would definately not recommend one for a rearer though.and it isn,t any good for jumping.

p s.i have jumped in the stock saddle,a small jump, but definately not as good as an english saddle to do this in. more liable to get some nasty bruises in it.
