Yeah they all drink differently too.. I have kept horses for 40 years and don’t know really how much any of them drink and in that 40 year I have only ever been told by a vet once to monitor fluids and that was immediately post colic surgery… other than that when I have asked vets with sick horses do they want a record of what they have drank they have always been very dismissive. As for the leaks - I’ve had a couple over the years but very few and I’ve had a lot wetter beds when someone has knocked over a bucket of water … oh and I value my back tooI don't really understand this idea of knowing how much your has drunk as a reason for disliking automatic drinkers.
Unless your horse is stabled 24/7, or is turned out in individual paddocks with buckets, you won't know anyway.
I can tell if mine is drinking enough by the colour of the urine, or too much by the wetness of the bed.
