Automatic water drinkers - yay or nay?

But in reality is this true? I have 7 horses and can pick up when something is wrong before water consumption drops, in fact in 25 years I don't think water consumption has ever been an indication of a problem.

Couldn't agree more. Plain horsemastership, nothing else; if you haven't spotted the problem before dehydration there is something amiss with your management I'm afraid.

I work on a yard and LOVE our automatic waterers. We do have 50 horses though :)

The only problem we have is when it freezes & quite often the odd one leaks some of them are quite old though.

At my old DIY yard we had a tap in each stable and everyone used to just keep a big trug bucket underneath. this means it was easy to clean in the morning but no lugging around full buckets of water. I think I would consider this if I had my own yard.

It worked really well there were no issues with injuries or damage to the taps etc.
