I am in a dilema whether to try Autumn hunting with my TB mare aged 7. I have owned her for 2 years and when i got her she hadn't done anything not even seen traffic! Now, after much patience she is reasonable well behaved but very spooky with a tendancy to turn and try to run away from anything that spooks her. I have no transport so taking her to shows is not practical but would love to try something new with her. I have taken her on a couple of fun rides where she was very on her toes all the way round but generally well behaved. Do you think taking her hunting would be a good thing or would it undo all the work i have done with her to calm her down? HELP!!

I hunted my mad jumping horse it did him good and was a good chance to let some steam off and it actually had a calming affect on him.
I also hunted my mums very quiet jumping horse and it did the complete oppisite and he would be wund up for days after, so its very hard to tell which way it would go. If you dont get a chance to go out often it would be nice for your horse to see something different but to be honest the only way you would find out is by going. If you think shes going to be particulary lively the do prehunts which arent as busy and also try and stay near the front.:)

From experience hunting can be fantastic for horses and bring them on tremendously - there are many eventers and racehorse trainers who owe it all to hunting!
However, the horse needs to be stretched, have fun and end up tired when the day is over. This is prob not going to happen with Autumn Hunting, where there will be smaller fields, but far more hanging around, interspersed with frenetic activty - where your horse will prob. go bananas.....might not, but if I were to lay a bet!
Wait until the season starts properly, try for a weekday, term time, when less will be out, and go for it......good luck

You've made a good point about the hanging around more with autumn hunting - i suppose i was thinking that smaller fields and quieter riding would be a better introduction; now i'm not so sure!

i have a similar problem i am going to go with a very experienced friend at a local meet and my pony wil have his pelham in so hopefully he will be calm and relaxed maybe you coud go with someone you know with another horse that is riends with yours

unfortunately the two horses mine is with are both retired! Are you opting for the Autumn hunting or the full hunting that's my dilema now!!
